Let's begin at the beginning, shall we?

The Bible begins in the Old Testament,

written around 3500 years ago.

The first five books of the Old Testament,

Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy

are known as the Pentateuch or books of the law.

The next 12 books, Joshua, Judges, Ruth,

1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 King, 2 Kings,

00:00:53

1 Chronicle, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther.

Whew. That's a lot.

00:00:59

These are known as the historical books.

This brings us to the books of the Bible

known as the Wisdom Literature.

It starts with Job and then into

00:01:13

a collection of 150 lyrical poems known as the Psalms.

- Today is all about praise.

00:01:37

That's right praising God.

00:01:39

And I'm going to give you a spoiler alert,

00:01:41

it's actually not for Him, it's for us.

I'm Hannah Driskill,

and we're going to be exploring Psalm 150 today,

which has a whole lot to say about praise

00:01:50

and it even talks about all the ways to praise Him,

00:01:52

but even in dance.

00:01:54

And there's a song, I know that you know it,

that when it plays, no matter where I'm at,

00:01:57

no matter what I'm doing, I got to sing it.

Let's do it right now.

I got that good soul in my feet

I feel that hot blood in my body when it drops

I can't take my eyes up off of it,

moving so phenomenally

Room on lock, the way we rock it, so don't stop.

Man, wish it didn't have to stop

because that song changes

the whole world for me and my mood.

And today we're going to talk about

how praise might just change your perspective

00:02:29

and maybe even your life. Let's hop to it.

So by now, maybe you figured out

that I work at Crossroads Church.

Some people might give me a title,

00:02:47

but others might just say, I'm in ministry.

00:02:49

But for real, y'all, I'm just a church professional.

That sounds a little weird, right?

00:02:53

Professional churcher.

00:02:55

But it's no weirder than a professional hot dog eater

00:02:58

or professional tag you're it player.

00:03:00

And I wish I had heard about that one on Career Day,

00:03:02

because I've got to be honest, I might not be here.

00:03:05

I'm just kidding.

00:03:06

Anyway, so speaking of professions, today

00:03:08

we're going to look at some professional praisers.

00:03:11

That's right.

00:03:12

The writers of the Psalms, they were pro pay praisers,

00:03:15

people who express approval and admiration for God.

00:03:18

And I'm not talking about your normal worship leader

00:03:21

who you may have seen saying on an episode like this

00:03:23

or maybe even your favorite worship artist,

00:03:26

if you have one that you're thinking about right now.

00:03:28

Now, though, these folks are paid to lead worship

00:03:31

in the form of music for God's glory,

00:03:33

the Psalmists who wrote the Psalms

00:03:35

were round the clock temple praisers.

00:03:38

I'm talking the writers and the people discussed

00:03:41

in the Book of Psalms, they were the Denny's,

00:03:43

the IHOP, and the superior Waffle House of praise.

00:03:47

They never shut down.

00:03:49

I'm talking 24/7 praise

00:03:51

was their full time job in the temple,

00:03:54

and that's exactly the way the King David wanted it.

00:03:56

See, David was the king of Israel at this time,

00:03:59

and he's often credited with writing many of the Psalms.

00:04:03

David loved praise, and so he spent a lot of time

00:04:08

and energy and money dedicated to praising God,

00:04:11

specifically through music.

00:04:13

And so, David, the professional praiser

00:04:15

writes this Psalm, Psalms 150:

00:04:47

Here we have almost the most perfect litany of words.

00:04:51

It tells us all the information

00:04:53

a journalist could ever want.

00:04:54

It tells us what: praise.

00:04:56

It tells us where: in the sanctuary

00:04:58

and basically everywhere because of firmament.

00:05:01

It tells us why: for His mighty acts

00:05:03

and His excellent greatness.

00:05:05

It tells us who: everything that has breath.

00:05:08

And it spends most of the time talking about how:

00:05:11

with all of the instruments

00:05:12

and everything that you have.

00:05:14

So as you can tell, the writer is adamant about praise.

00:05:17

He's encouraging everyone to do it,

00:05:19

even encouraging them to do it loudly.

00:05:22

And this is because he understands something:

00:05:25

Praise is a command.

00:05:27

In Hebrews 13:15 it says:

00:05:38

In Isaiah 43:21, God commands us:

00:05:47

This is a commandment.

00:05:49

No, no, no, not like the Ten Commandments,

00:05:51

but it's something that Jesus asks us to do

00:05:53

in Scripture over and over.

00:05:56

And so cue the entrance, that's us.

00:05:58

We're the people He's commanding.

00:06:00

If you're following Jesus,

00:06:01

He's calling us to praise Him.

00:06:04

And if you're not following Jesus,

00:06:05

He's inviting you to stick around and see

00:06:07

why He's worthy of the praise that He commands.

00:06:10

Now, some of you might be wrongfully thinking,

00:06:13

"Oh, how pompous, how incredibly needy

00:06:16

for God to require praise of us.

00:06:19

What kind of God demands

00:06:20

that everything with breath praise Him?"

00:06:24

I'm calling you out because that's a really good question.

00:06:27

C.S. Lewis once wrote:

00:06:41

That's a powerful conclusion.

00:06:42

See, what he's saying is God's command to praise Him

00:06:45

is simply based on truth, the truth of who He is.

00:06:49

And He does not need us to make it true.

00:06:53

Here's a reality: God does not need our praise.

00:06:58

He just wants it.

00:06:59

He's not like man who selfishly desires praise.

00:07:03

The praise does not make His head get big like ours,

00:07:07

and it doesn't make Him narcissistic

00:07:08

because desire and command are not the same thing.

00:07:12

He commands us to do it

00:07:14

because it makes our lives better.

00:07:16

You might not believe me, I'm going to tell you how.

Now, let's get back to the message.

- When most people read Psalm 150,

00:08:30

the most memorable part is the list of instruments,

00:08:33

and so they have a whole bunch in there.

00:08:35

But I imagine it's some stuff like

00:08:37

it does say stringed instruments,

00:08:38

you know, if this has strings;

00:08:40

or the tambourines, supposed to praise Him with that,

00:08:42

or praise Him with, you know, the clown thing, whatever.

00:08:44

All the Psalmist is trying to suggest

00:08:47

is that we use whatever we can to praise God.

00:08:50

And people have written countless songs

00:08:52

about this very portion of Scripture.

00:08:54

My personal favorite is called Anthem of Praise

00:08:56

by Richard Smallwood. It's pretty dope.

00:08:58

Check it out if you have the time.

But the reason there's so many iterations of music

00:09:03

on this one portion of Scripture is because

00:09:05

it's clear, it's instructive, and it's downright fun.

00:09:10

It's saying, bang the cymbal

00:09:12

and, voila, you're doing it. You're praising God.

00:09:15

But here's the thing, some of us

00:09:17

might not actually play any of these instruments

00:09:20

or even own a cymbal.

00:09:22

Was that scripture not for us?

00:09:25

It's actually the opposite.

00:09:26

See the writer, he lists all these instruments,

00:09:29

not because he's making a comprehensive,

00:09:31

all inclusive list of how to praise God,

00:09:34

but because he's trying to encourage us

00:09:36

to use whatever we have to praise God.

00:09:40

Why?

00:09:41

Well, because praise is the proper response.

00:09:45

Wait a minute, Hannah, what do you mean?

00:09:47

All right. All right. Let me break it down for you.

00:09:49

In a stadium or an arena,

00:09:51

when a player scores a point, what happens?

00:09:54

[cheering]

00:09:55

Exactly. The crowd loses it.

00:09:58

And when the Warriors get their ring later on,

00:10:01

I'll be losing it too as if I won.

00:10:03

Now, why?

00:10:04

Well, because society deems

00:10:06

that this is the proper response.

00:10:08

If the team gets praise, it's in that moment

00:10:12

that we know they deserve praise

00:10:14

because they've got a point, and that behavior is rewarded.

00:10:17

So if the proper response is for a mere mortal

00:10:21

who scored a point is to scream and to dance

00:10:25

and to shout with excitement,

00:10:26

I'm gonna challenge us here a bit.

00:10:28

What's the proper response for a God of the universe

00:10:31

who has all power?

00:10:33

And this is what the writer is saying.

00:10:35

He's saying pull out all the stops.

00:10:37

Do whatever it is that you have to do to praise God.

00:10:41

Literally go crazy.

00:10:43

And yet, sometimes it honestly feels like

00:10:46

the church, the real praisers,

00:10:48

the people who should be the loudest are the quietest.

00:10:52

Now, I'm not talking about just singing or shouting,

00:10:54

because maybe singing in church is not your thing

00:10:56

and maybe you don't own any of these instruments.

00:10:59

And that's okay, because praise doesn't actually

00:11:02

require singing or even a sanctuary for that matter.

00:11:06

The writer tells us to praise God in the sanctuary

00:11:09

and in the mighty firmament,

00:11:10

which just means sky or heaven.

00:11:13

And so, yes, there is a corporate praise at church

00:11:15

or worship, and that's really good.

00:11:17

And it can happen in a sanctuary, and that's wonderful.

00:11:20

But the better thing is

00:11:22

is that when we choose to accept Jesus,

00:11:24

He actually makes us into a sanctuary

00:11:27

and He dwells with us.

00:11:29

So we don't actually need a sanctuary to praise,

00:11:32

we've just got to start doing it.

00:11:33

And even more so, the writer says,

00:11:35

"Give God praise in the firmament,"

00:11:37

which just means under the open sky.

00:11:38

So you can praise God wherever there's a sky.

00:11:41

See the world, they should not be outdoing us in praise.

00:11:46

Praise is glorifying God with all that you have

00:11:49

and even whatever you have.

00:11:51

So it might be telling a friend about Jesus.

00:11:54

It might mean sharing your story,

00:11:56

or it might mean actually leaning into worship

00:11:59

through music or through giving.

00:12:00

It might mean starting a prayer schedule,

00:12:03

posting praises around your house

00:12:05

so you don't forget them.

00:12:06

It might mean spending time discipling someone.

00:12:10

See, the writer's goal was never to give us

00:12:13

an all comprehensive, inclusive list,

00:12:15

even though that list is awesome.

00:12:17

His goal was to tell us to use every single thing

00:12:21

that we have to praise God

00:12:23

because it is the proper response.

00:12:26

Now maybe you're on board.

00:12:28

Maybe you're like, "Okay, Hannah,

00:12:29

finally it's the proper response. I get it.

00:12:32

But I don't actually know where to start."

00:12:35

Well, the writer invites us to praise God

00:12:38

for His mighty acts and His excellent greatness.

00:12:40

He tells us where to start.

00:12:42

And that just means that we should praise God

00:12:44

for what He's done for us.

00:12:45

We should look around and think about

00:12:46

all the good things that we have in our lives

00:12:48

and maybe even for those around us

00:12:50

and we should give God praise for what He's doing,

00:12:53

what He's going to do, and for what He's done.

00:12:55

See, what I love, though, is the next part,

00:12:58

because it means that we should praise God

00:13:00

for who He is.

00:13:03

We should praise God for His excellent greatness.

00:13:06

And that should just be enough for us to praise Him.

00:13:09

See, I think the writer was actually wise

00:13:11

to include this, because if I'm honest,

00:13:15

God doesn't always do what I want Him to do.

00:13:17

He's not some mighty magician who wins, He gets praise,

00:13:21

He bends to our every whim.

00:13:23

That's not how it works.

00:13:24

Sometimes I even need to lament

00:13:26

and I don't actually want to praise God.

00:13:29

Now see, if I only praised Him

00:13:31

when He did something that I wanted,

00:13:33

it sure would be really, really difficult

00:13:35

to get out of lament and to praise Him at all right now,

00:13:38

because the current situation in America

00:13:41

is so messed up with all the gun violence,

00:13:43

all of the racially motivated massacres and murders,

00:13:46

all of the poverty,

00:13:47

the epidemic that seems to only get worse.

00:13:50

And even the capital C Church that seems

00:13:52

more interested in titles and fame

00:13:55

than they are in love and mercy.

00:13:57

See, when I think about that,

00:13:58

I'm going to be honest, y'all.

00:13:59

And maybe it's not okay to be honest,

00:14:01

but it seems impossible to praise God, for what He's done,

00:14:04

because He's not doing what I want Him to do.

00:14:08

If I only praised God for His mighty acts,

00:14:11

I would constantly sit and lament.

00:14:14

And even though Jesus,

00:14:15

He wants to hear our lamentations, He does.

00:14:18

We are meant to praise Him.

00:14:20

See, but when I think about who God is,

00:14:24

a worthy God, whose very nature is good

00:14:28

and true and loving,

00:14:30

even when I can't see it or feel it,

00:14:33

I can praise Him because of who He is

00:14:35

will always be greater than what He's done.

00:14:38

And it requires praise from us, His people.

00:14:42

So if we don't need a place,

00:14:44

we don't need this perfect praise tool of instrument,

00:14:46

we already have a good reason,

00:14:49

what is it that we need to praise God?

00:14:51

See, there's only one requirement for praise,

00:14:55

that is breath.

00:14:57

And it's this bare minimum requirement

00:15:00

that's so important because it lets us know

00:15:02

that there's no fancy requirement.

00:15:04

You don't need accolades to praise God.

00:15:06

You don't need a certain position to praise God.

00:15:08

You don't need to be qualified

00:15:09

or have the perfect sound.

00:15:11

Your voice can be shaky.

00:15:12

The first time you share your story,

00:15:14

you might leave out some parts

00:15:15

and all of it is okay

00:15:17

because God just wants you to praise Him.

00:15:20

He loves to hear it.

00:15:22

And now He's not asking you to praise Him

00:15:24

or commanding you to praise Him

00:15:26

because he's narcissistic.

00:15:27

I've got to remind ya'll, this is for us.

00:15:30

Praising God does something in us.

00:15:35

Recently I was traveling back from Zimbabwe

00:15:37

and I was in an airport and,

00:15:40

you know, had to travel so I was in an airport.

00:15:42

Everyone looked around me upset.

00:15:44

Everyone was like angry.

00:15:46

And of course, traveling internationally

00:15:48

comes with all the woes of traveling internationally.

00:15:50

Time, it was boring.

00:15:52

I was tired, I was hungry.

00:15:53

Add COVID to all of that and it easily is

00:15:57

one of the most frustrating nightmares I've ever had.

00:16:00

So as I was standing in line,

00:16:01

after standing there for over 30 minutes,

00:16:03

might I add, I just started dancing.

00:16:06

There was no music and I looked crazy

00:16:09

because there was no music even in the vicinity,

00:16:11

even in the overhead playing.

00:16:12

And honestly, I didn't care

00:16:14

because the dancing was making me feel better.

00:16:17

It actually made me stop complaining

00:16:20

and it felt good to just move.

00:16:22

And then I started to notice that others around me

00:16:24

started to smile and even laugh.

00:16:27

This one lady asked me, she said, "Where is the music?"

00:16:31

I simply replied, "It's wherever you make it."

00:16:35

See what dancing did for me that day

00:16:37

is what praise does for us.

00:16:39

Although we are attributing glory to God

00:16:41

and we should be doing that,

00:16:42

praise improves our lives

00:16:44

and the lives of those around us.

00:16:46

And that is what the writer forgot to tell us.

00:16:49

He made the perfect litany,

00:16:50

but he forgot to mention that

00:16:52

the command of praise makes our lives better.

00:16:55

Praise is God's invite to dance just for a little while

00:17:00

while we're in the airport.

00:17:02

See, it causes us actually to align ourselves with Him,

00:17:06

to reflect on the expression of His character.

00:17:09

See, the writer left out that praise is

00:17:11

our Father's way of cheering us up

00:17:14

and inviting us into joy,

00:17:16

because it makes us feel like King David

00:17:18

when he said in Psalm 31:19,

00:17:20

How great is your goodness?

00:17:23

Praise makes us reflect on what God has done for us

00:17:26

and for others.

00:17:27

It builds our faith.

00:17:28

It gives us hope because we look back at

00:17:30

the God of the Bible and we realize

00:17:33

God doesn't actually change.

00:17:35

And if He doesn't change,

00:17:36

if He healed before, He can do it again.

00:17:39

If He provided before, He can do it again.

00:17:42

If He made a way, He can do it again.

00:17:46

Praise does all of this for us while we glorify Him.

00:17:51

And finally, praise does something for us

00:17:53

that we can never quite ourselves do

00:17:56

if we just thought about it.

00:17:58

Praise invites us into submission.

00:18:01

When we praise God,

00:18:02

we acknowledge His authority as our Father,

00:18:05

as our Lord, as our place under Him.

00:18:08

Praise does all of that.

00:18:09

So here's what I want you to do,

00:18:11

I want you to figure out your praise tools.

00:18:13

Maybe it's not an instrument,

00:18:14

maybe it's not singing,

00:18:16

but God wants us to praise Him.

00:18:17

And if we don't, Jesus said

00:18:19

that the very rocks will cry out,

00:18:21

because that's just how worthy God is of

00:18:23

praise. Now, since I don't want any rocks

00:18:26

to start talking around me,

00:18:27

that means we all better get to praising.

00:18:29

So this week, this month, today,

00:18:32

I want you to focus on praise.

00:18:34

Focus on lifting up Jesus with your words

00:18:36

and with your actions.

00:18:37

This is something to be acted upon, Psalm 150.

00:18:41

Even if we don't have any of the instruments

00:18:43

that are listed in that scripture,

00:18:44

we just got to use what we have.

00:18:47

So if you have a voice,

00:18:48

whisper your praises to God throughout the day.

00:18:50

If you know you need to start singing in church more,

00:18:52

you need to do it.

00:18:53

If you dance, dance, dance and praise God.

00:18:56

When I was younger, the older mothers in my church

00:18:58

would say, "Hey, if I can't say a word,

00:19:00

I'm just going to wave my hand."

00:19:01

So if all you have is a praise wave, just wave.

00:19:05

If there is something that you know you can do

00:19:07

to praise God more in your life, do it

00:19:10

because it's our proper response.

00:19:13

And God invites us in to praise because it's for us.

00:19:16

In a moment, you're going to go into a time of singing

00:19:20

that is actually praising God

00:19:21

and lifting Him up through song.

00:19:23

You can join into that if that's your thing,

00:19:25

but if it's not, I want you to actually sit

00:19:27

and reflect on what what's being said.

00:19:29

Praise is all of us just saying our words to God,

00:19:32

our affirmation and approval for what He's done.

00:19:35

I'm going to model it right now

00:19:36

and what it looks like in prayer.

00:19:37

It might feel weird at first, but you have to know

00:19:40

that once you start doing it,

00:19:41

it changes things and God is happy with it.

00:19:44

So I'm going to pray for us and then let us

00:19:47

listen to a time of music together.

00:19:49

God, just thank You so much for everything You've done.

We have breath

00:19:53

and that is what qualifies us to praise You.

00:19:56

Thank You for Your goodness, for Your mercy.

00:19:58

God, You are just God, You're holy and You're awesome.

Thanks for everything You've done in my life.

Thank You for giving me breath to praise you,

the opportunity to speak to Your people,

to encourage them to praise You, Lord.
