is how does that play out for all the

what's wrong in the world so I'm gonna

God wants to say something to you and so

god I do believe that every person who

is engaging wherever they are engaging

and that people would just do business

in 2nd Corinthians 5:10 this is what it

says it says for we must all appear

before the judgment seat of Christ so

that each one may receive what is due

for what he has done in the body whether

good or evil so if you don't hear

anything else today I just want to help

us understand that what revelation tells

there's eternal weight to your present

00:24:18

choices there's eternal weight to your

present choices and I think in some ways

today is one of those messages where we

have to be willing to recognize that God

is both a judge and he's also a loving

00:24:34

father and that if he is in fact God and

00:24:37

if he is in fact just then we need him

00:24:40

to be both of those things it's it's

00:24:42

inherent that he would be both of those

00:24:43

things maybe another way to think about

00:24:45

it is this he is both a king and a

00:24:47

father and what we see in Revelation is

00:24:51

what happens when Jesus when Jesus comes

back in the authority of a king how does

00:24:57

that play out when we all stand before

00:25:00

the judgment seat of Christ I believe no

00:25:01

matter what you believe about God you're

00:25:04

gonna stand before him one day we're

00:25:06

gonna stand before him and that's gonna

00:25:08

be a sobering reality in fact Jesus

00:25:14

talks about this regularly in the Bible

00:25:16

Jesus we we think oftentimes with the

00:25:19

teaching of Jesus and he

00:25:20

he teaches us what the father is like

00:25:22

but Jesus also clearly says that a day

00:25:25

of judgment is coming when we talk about

00:25:26

Judgment Day that's not a new thing this

00:25:28

is you know I think since the beginning

00:25:29

of time people have been talking about

00:25:31

the end of time and there's always been

00:25:32

this through line in that of a day of

00:25:34

judgment a day of accounting a day when

00:25:36

things get put right a day when things

00:25:38

get laid in the light and therefore

00:25:40

there are consequences for the choices

00:25:41

that you and I make but Jesus talks

00:25:44

about this all throughout the Bible

00:25:45

there's this place later in his teaching

00:25:48

ministry right before he's about to go

00:25:50

to the cross we're in the book of

00:25:52

Matthew was captured as three distinct

00:25:54

stories that all had the same point

00:25:55

Jesus tells a story you may have heard

00:25:57

of it as the parable of the talents

00:25:59

where a king gives significant amounts

00:26:02

of money to his servants and goes away

00:26:04

and at some point there's an accounting

00:26:06

in that same chapter Jesus tells the

00:26:08

story of 10 brides who are preparing

00:26:11

their candles because their bridegroom

00:26:13

is going to come at night because in

00:26:15

that day what would happen is you get

00:26:16

betrothed to someone but there was a

00:26:18

time between the betrothal and the

00:26:20

actual wedding and so while the bride

00:26:22

why the groom was away preparing the

00:26:24

home and getting things ready for the

00:26:26

bride you had to be ready Jesus tells

00:26:27

that same story right after the story of

00:26:29

the parable the talents and then he

00:26:30

tells the story of a shepherd dividing

00:26:33

sheep from goats in the same chapter

00:26:35

three stories but they all had the same

00:26:38

point which is this in authority has

00:26:40

come and has given you and I a gift and

00:26:44

that authority has gone away for a time

00:26:47

but at some point that authority will

00:26:50

return and when that authority returns

00:26:52

there will be a day of accounting Jesus

00:26:56

puts it like this at the end of Matthew

00:26:58

25 he says when the Son of Man comes in

00:27:01

his glory and all the angels with him

00:27:03

then he will sit on his glorious throne

00:27:05

that's a sign of authority and before

00:27:08

him will be gathered all the nations and

00:27:11

he will separate people one from another

00:27:14

as a shepherd separates the sheep from

00:27:17

the goats now this is the idea of

00:27:21

judgment and when we hear that we're

00:27:24

judge I think oftentimes we think of it

00:27:26

as like you know it's God dissing me

00:27:27

right it's God sitting back and just

00:27:29

kind of looking at all the bad stuff I

00:27:30

do right you know he's just kind of

00:27:31

distance is a distance thing but no

00:27:33

it means actually the word judge in the

00:27:36

Greek language is the word cry no and it

00:27:38

means to separate distinguish or

00:27:41

discriminate between good and evil and

00:27:44

quite frankly we want a judge I mean you

00:27:49

know if I were to leave here and speed

00:27:52

and in my speeding hit someone that I'm

00:27:56

gonna end up in Hamilton County in

00:27:58

Cincinnati I don't know where this view

00:27:59

I'm gonna end up with the Hamilton

00:28:00

County Justice Center and I'm gonna end

00:28:01

up there not at the Justice Center only

00:28:03

but at the Hamilton courthouse and I'm

00:28:04

gonna have to sit before stand before a

00:28:06

judge and that judge is gonna determine

00:28:08

and distinguish right from wrong and

00:28:11

that judge is gonna have consequences

00:28:12

that they can put on me based on my

00:28:15

actions and so Jesus is saying the same

is true on an eternal scale and

00:28:22

Revelation gives us the clearest picture

of what that moment looks like so I'm

gonna read this to you and as I read it

as much as you can I want you to put

this picture in your mind I want you to

envision what this will be like because

John is describing really something

that's indescribable but something that

is very inevitable in Revelations 20

starting at verse 11 it says then I saw

a great white throne and him who was

seated on it from his presence earth and

sky fled away and no place was found for

them and I saw the dead great and small

standing before the throne and books

were opened

then another book was opened which is

the book of life and the dead were

judged by what was written in the books

according to what they had done and the

sea gave up the dead who were in it

death and Hades gave up the dead who

were in them and they were judged each

one of them according to what they had

done then death and Hades were thrown

into the lake of fire this is the second

death the lake of fire and if anyone's

name was not found written in the book

of life he was thrown into the lake of

fire and these are weighty words and and

kinds of things that will be brought up

before Jesus as he sits on that judgment

seat on the day of judgment look at what

it says in Matthew chapter 12 verse 36

judgment people will give account for

every careless word they speak for by

your words you will be justified and by

your words you will be condemned I

believe that one of those books that's

going to be opened up for all of us on

the day of judgment is the book of words

and it's very clear it's every word it's

every word and so when I think about my

book of words I think about all the

words that I have spoken over the course

of my life to whoever I have spoken them

to in whatever context thankfully and

before Jesus and he's not open that book

and he's gonna have a conversation not

about some of those things but all of

those things the book of words look at

what it says in 2nd Corinthians 5:10 we

appear before the judgment seat of

Christ so that each one may receive what

is due for what he has done in the body

whether good or evil I believe that when

we stand before Jesus there is also

action everything that you and I have

ever done is going to be in this book

and again if I think about my book of

actions they're not all bad all of my

actions aren't bad there are some good

actions that I've done in my life one of

the things my wife and I have done is

along with many hundreds of people in

significant money significant like

cashed out some retirement accounts to

make sure that every person who wants to

hear the language of Jesus in the way

that we communicate it has a place to do

that that girls can be rescued out of

sex trades and sex slavery in India

we've been able to do things to make

those things possible for people and

thankfully all of those are going to be

in the book of actions and I believe

there are rewards coming for those of us

who have done those things praise God

for that and and every action will be

unfolded in that book and all of my

actions haven't been Noble I think about

when I was in Middle School where I

bullied a kid that used to be a friend

of mine so badly that he was thrown into

depression I think about the times when

I stole from a job that I worked I think

about all of these actions that I have

done yes I have some good actions but

man do I really want to give an account

for every action that

done in my life I will I believe you

will they're all gonna be in the book

but not only that look at what it says

in first Corinthians 4 3 through 5 it

says therefore do not pronounce judgment

before the times before the Lord comes

who will bring to light the things now

hidden in darkness and will disclose the

purposes of the heart then each one will

receive his commendation from God I

actions but there's also going to be a

book of thoughts disclose the inner

point where I realize all the movies I

are part of your life you have already

no one will ever know about the secret

secret abuse I'm never gonna tell

anybody about that time when I stole I'm

that I have hurt other people I'm not

habit that somehow I've been able to

cover up even from the people in my own

home and yet on the Judgment Day all of

those actions all of those thoughts all

of those words and every secret thing

will be laid bare at the judgment seat

of Jesus and he will be separating out

what is good for what is evil so I don't

know about you but that reality causes

problems for me see here's my problem I

think you share this problem but I've

done some good I've done some good right

problem I have problem you have this how

good is good enough how good is good

enough and what's the curve that I'm

being graded on right I mean if the

curves that I'm being graded on is like

Adolf Hitler and Idi Amin I'm okay I

think

but if it's Mother Teresa I'm not okay

you're not okay so the problem we have

is we have to wrestle with how good is

00:38:09

good enough and God gives us a clear

00:38:11

answer friends he says you know what's

00:38:13

good enough my son my son is good enough

00:38:18

his perfection is good enough his

00:38:21

sinlessness is good enough his reality

00:38:25

for the 30 years the 33 years that he

00:38:28

lived on earth is that everything in

00:38:29

this book is perfect he's good enough

00:38:32

again remember Jesus's story and

00:38:35

Matthew 25 all three those stories same

00:38:37

thing he says in authority comes and

00:38:39

leaves a gift then the authority goes

00:38:42

away but at some point we will have to

00:38:45

give an account for what we do with the

00:38:47

gift thankfully and all of those stories

00:38:50

the servants are left with money the

00:38:52

bridegroom's are left with candles they

00:38:56

are given a gift they aren't left

00:38:58

stranded what's the gift that we've been

00:38:59

given one of Jesus's closest friends

Peter puts it this way he says for

christ also suffered once for sins so

that the righteous the righteous for the

unrighteous that he might bring us to

God so let me tell you what's not fair

it is not fair for me to think that any

amount of good works that I could

is is is gonna appease God more than the

perfect painful sacrifice of His Son

Jesus and see if we're relying on our

good that I can do in this life is

better than the perfect sacrifice of

that would actually even operate as if

then it says one other book is open and

it is the book of life this book of

weighty weighty book and it changes the

dynamics immediately at the judgment

is every name of every person who has

NOT banking on my good works to put me

in right relationship with God I'm not

gonna take that gamble I'm not gonna do

I am banking my faith I'm banking my

hope I'm banking my happiness on the

perfect work of Jesus and the

00:40:44

weightiness of that work to save me from

all of the bad works that I've done

that's the book that in Revelations 12

is opened and I believe that book I

believe it has my name in it not because

I deserve it

00:41:05

in fact my name is in that boat because

I don't deserve it but I'm relying on it

I just surrender to Jesus see see these

books are based on my works thank God

that book is based on his it's based on

his work on behalf of you and me so what

does all this mean for us I think it

means three very specific things and I

it if right now you are saying in your

that it will motivate you to read the

Bible I pray that it will motivate you

to get around other people who believe

ultimate accountability for you and for

your life to Jesus that is awesome that

those books is still going to be

examined awkward

my eternal destiny is sure but I'm still

gonna have to have some conversations

with God about those careless words to

my kid he still don't want to talk to me

about some of the thoughts that

00:42:43

continually were in my mind that's still

a conversation waiting for me I mean if

that's not a motivation to start growing

00:42:50

I don't know what is

00:42:52

I would like to eliminate as much of

00:42:54

those conversations as possible before I

00:42:56

stand before the judgment seat of Jesus

but we're all going to stand there the

00:43:00

question is what will be standing under

00:43:02

when we get there it's going to be a day

00:43:03

of ultimate accountability it's also

00:43:04

going to be a day of ultimate

00:43:06

consequence and I I don't have time to

00:43:11

unpack all that's in just those verses

00:43:14

we read and in revelation Hades death

00:43:19

giving up their dead how does death give

00:43:21

up the dead what does that mean I don't

00:43:24

have time to unpack that but here's what

00:43:27

I want you to see there is a finality we

00:43:30

see in Revelation 20 then at the end of

00:43:33

all of that some people end up in what's

00:43:36

called a lake of fire and some people

00:43:39

end up in the presence of God forever to

00:43:42

enjoy his presence and to enjoy what we

00:43:44

would think of as heaven forever and let

00:43:46

me just say this and we say that at

00:43:47

least this much that that lake of fire

00:43:50

that word around hell is actually based

00:43:53

on a real place in Jerusalem it's a

00:43:54

place where they would burn the garbage

00:43:56

so it was like a perpetual burning place

00:43:58

and so I don't know that that means that

00:44:00

people who haven't followed Jesus are

00:44:02

literally burning I don't know that

00:44:03

that's what it means I think they're

00:44:04

giving an illustration based on

00:44:06

something people could identify with in

00:44:07

their context but I do believe this I

00:44:10

believe right now you are making a

00:44:11

choice and it has eternal consequences

00:44:13

some of us right now are here because we

00:44:16

want to run toward God we believe God is

00:44:19

the only way to life and we want more

00:44:21

and more of our life under his authority

00:44:22

we want more and more of his life for us

00:44:24

it's called the book of life we want his

00:44:26

life now and if that's what you want

00:44:28

friends you should be encouraged because

00:44:30

eternity is you getting exactly what you

00:44:32

want more of God in his fullness in his

00:44:35

perfection in all that he has for you

00:44:37

and you will enjoy him forever that's

00:44:40

what heaven is heaven is you getting

00:44:43

you want right now based on your choices

00:44:46

but again if he's fair if he's just that

00:44:50

would mean that right now if you are

00:44:53

stiff-arming god if you are saying god I

00:44:55

want nothing to do with you you can't

00:44:58

have control of my life you don't have

00:45:00

authority in my life then eternity for

00:45:02

you is you getting exactly what you want

00:45:07

if you're running away from him now

00:45:09

and you don't want relationship with him

00:45:11

now then the eternal consequence of that

00:45:14

is you get what you wanted

00:45:17

you get what you want and what that

00:45:21

means is there's one ultimate question

00:45:23

that matters more than any question you

00:45:25

could ever consider in your life it's a

00:45:27

question we see captured by Pilate who

00:45:29

was the judge when Jesus was here the

00:45:31

first time separating and dividing Jesus

00:45:33

and deciding what would happen with him

00:45:34

and in Matthew 27 22 Pilate says then

00:45:37

what shall I do with Jesus who is called

00:45:39

Christ and Friends that's the key

00:45:43

question what will you do with Jesus who

00:45:47

was called Christ the lamb it says in

00:45:49

Revelation who died who was slain the

00:45:52

lamb who actually because of his death

00:45:54

has given the opportunity for your name

00:45:56

to be written in the book of life what

00:45:57

will you do with Jesus and let me be

00:46:01

clear there's a very legitimate

00:46:03

objection you can have to all of this

00:46:04

it's an obvious objection Chuck you're

reading words that were written 2,000

00:46:11

years ago with the sense of urgency as

00:46:13

if this was going to happen tomorrow

00:46:15

it's been 2,000 years what is this idea

of him coming soon Jesus is coming soon

get your life right it's been 2,000

years that is a very legitimate

objection that the Bible anticipated

2,000 years ago and in 2nd Peter chapter

3 it says this knowing first of all that

scoffers will come in the last days with

scoffing following their own sinful

desires they will say where is the

00:46:39

promise of his coming for ever since the

father's fell asleep all things are

continuing as they were from the

beginning of creation so Peter was

anticipating this objection yeah I know

it seems like it this is really gonna

happen wouldn't it have happened by now

and listen to what Peter responds he

says later in that same chapter but do

not overlook this one fact beloved that

with the Lord one day is as a thousand

years so let's first just pause and

recognize that God's sense of time is

different than yours in mine that he's

playing for eternity right now but then

Peter goes on to say this the Lord is

not slow to fulfill his promise as some

count slowness but is patient toward you

not wishing that any should perish but

that all should reach repentance why

hasn't it happened yet I believe one of

the reasons it hasn't happened yet

is because if you are in here listening

to this and haven't given your life to

can't just tell you we need God to be

just we need him to put things right

there are kids who didn't pick their

life who are starving in the world right

now there are women who are being raped

right now there are people who are

experiencing incredible pain right now

and I would like to believe that if

there is a God he will make things right

for them that he will someday make

00:51:21

things right

for all the brokenness in this world and

so he can choose to do that one of two

ways he can either cause the punishment

to come or all of us who are responsible

for those things or he can do what an

00:51:35

crazy crazy father would do what a

stepfather would do would just step into

a situation and say even though I didn't

birth you I will father you I will love

you I will rescue you this is what he

has done for you and me yes he's a

righteous judge he is also a loving

father let me tell you one other time in

my life where this hit me so hard

my sister-in-law my wife's sister was

dating a young man and they had a child

together

and while Maria was here we weren't

married yet we were kind in the process

of getting married Maria literally comes

out of the CVG Airport to a phone call

that his name is Gary that Gary had been

00:52:23

shot and killed the night before so

Marie and I immediately had to change

00:52:29

our plans and were driving to

00:52:30

Pennsylvania for the funeral of a 23

00:52:33

year old and Gary lived a hard life

00:52:42

Gary lived in the projects and Gary had

00:52:45

some friends that I would love for Gary

00:52:47

not to have and I remember going into

00:52:50

this funeral home for his funeral there

00:52:53

was a bunch of people in there and I'm

00:52:56

sure that if a raid happened in that

00:52:58

moment there would be more drugs and

00:53:00

more guns in that funeral home because

00:53:04

of the kind of people who were in the

00:53:05

room and in the midst of that these

00:53:08

young people are hurting they're in pain

00:53:11

they lost their friend this pastor gets

00:53:14

up and when I tell you I've never been

00:53:18

more angry at a pastor in my life he

00:53:21

gets up and for 20 minutes just starts

00:53:25

to berate these young people about their

00:53:28

life about their lifestyle about the

00:53:31

fact that they sell drugs about the fact

00:53:32

that they shoot all the stuff that was

00:53:34

right yes they do that but I could not

00:53:37

believe that you would miss this

00:53:38

opportunity to not tell them the other

00:53:40

side of the story how can you not tell

00:53:43

them the other side of the story

00:53:45

yes there is a righteous judge who's

00:53:47

gonna judge you for every wrong thing

00:53:49

you do and when he doesn't he will be

00:53:51

right in doing it but that righteous

00:53:53

judge sent his son long before you were

00:53:55

ever born so that you could come to

00:53:57

faith in him and you could be saved by

00:53:59

the work of his son for you if you're

00:54:05

here right now and you have never

00:54:06

understood that this is the stakes this

is what's going on what's going on is

you will stand before the judgment seat

of Jesus for every word every action

every thought and every secret thing and

when you do you can stand there on your

work or you can stand there on the
