Receive Weekly Teaching | Grow Week 2 | Anywhere Service

We can’t live on our own wisdom. We’re hungry for truth and need answers. But to truly learn we can’t Google everything. We need to receive weekly teaching from a trusted source. Kyle talks about how even Jesus received weekly teaching and how important it is for our growth.

  • 00:00:07
    - And the specific practice we're unpacking today
  • 00:00:09
    is receiving teaching weekly.
  • 00:00:11
It's a core practice that all of the followers of Jesus
  • 00:00:15
who have grown and experience that abundant life
  • 00:00:17
that Jesus promised, they have always prioritized.
  • 00:00:22
    - Welcome to Crossroads and welcome to the Grow Journey.
  • 00:00:25
I'm Brian, and before we get started,
  • 00:00:27
just what exactly is this Journey thing?
  • 00:00:32
Well, let me start with the word grow.
  • 00:00:34
In the Bible, we see seven practices that Jesus does.
  • 00:00:38
And when we unlock these proven practices
  • 00:00:41
in our own lives, we grow, we advance,
  • 00:00:44
we go to the next place, we feel closer to God.
  • 00:00:47
Each week of this series, we will be looking at
  • 00:00:49
a different one of the seven proven practices
  • 00:00:51
and figuring out how to apply to our individual lives.
  • 00:00:55
    That's the grow part.
  • 00:00:56
    The Journey part means
  • 00:00:57
that we're going on a journey together,
  • 00:01:01
a bunch of people going step by step
  • 00:01:03
through a process of self discovery
  • 00:01:06
    and sharpening one another
  • 00:01:08
and sensing God moment by moment, week by week.
  • 00:01:13
As a church, we're all doing it,
  • 00:01:14
and we do it by meeting in groups
  • 00:01:16
    and going through the guidebook,
  • 00:01:18
as well as having something to see online
  • 00:01:21
    or in a building.
  • 00:01:22
We'll show you how to do that later in the episode.
  • 00:01:25
    I'm glad you're watching.
  • 00:01:26
And I believe if you engage,
  • 00:01:28
you're going to grow closer to God in the next 20 minutes.
  • 00:01:30
    Now let's get started.
  • 00:01:38
    - If you want to treat a grow,
  • 00:01:40
to force it would be folly.
  • 00:01:43
You do not ask it: What will you make?
  • 00:01:46
    What will you produce?
  • 00:01:48
    How high will you reach?
  • 00:01:50
How fast can you get there?
  • 00:01:56
If you want to treat a grow, you simply resource it.
  • 00:01:59
You ask: What do you need?
  • 00:02:02
And you provide generously the light to bask in,
  • 00:02:07
the water to drink in, the fertile soil to root in,
  • 00:02:12
the holy space to take shape.
  • 00:02:16
God likens Himself to all these things:
  • 00:02:19
    the light of the world,
  • 00:02:22
    a well overflowing,
  • 00:02:23
    the very nutrients you need.
  • 00:02:26
If you are designed to grow,
  • 00:02:28
God doesn't force it; He resources it.
  • 00:02:37
    - But whose delight is in the law of the Lord
  • 00:02:39
and who meditates on his law day and night?
  • 00:02:43
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
  • 00:02:47
which yields its fruit in season
  • 00:02:49
and whose leaf does not wither.
  • 00:02:52
    Whatever they do prospers.
  • 00:03:00
    - You were designed to grow by simply receiving.
  • 00:03:04
    They need to receive.
  • 00:03:07
    What do you need?
  • 00:03:11
    - So, a question right out of the gate:
  • 00:03:13
who tries to teach you about what's important in life?
  • 00:03:16
Like who you are, what you're made for,
  • 00:03:18
how to live effectively and hopefully joyfully,
  • 00:03:21
where to invest your time and your energy?
  • 00:03:23
    All the important stuff.
  • 00:03:24
Well, the answer is everyone all the time.
  • 00:03:27
Or like the movie, everything everywhere all the time.
  • 00:03:30
In 2007, the Yankelovich research firm found that
  • 00:03:33
the average person was exposed to
  • 00:03:35
5000 different messages every day, which is insane.
  • 00:03:38
Only now that number has doubled to 10,000.
  • 00:03:41
So, we've seen 5000 by lunch. It's crazy.
  • 00:03:44
In fact, I just checked right before coming here,
  • 00:03:46
and Instagram wants me to invest my time, my energy,
  • 00:03:49
    my resources into working out.
  • 00:03:52
    Not a bad idea.
  • 00:03:53
You Tube wants me to invest my time, my energy,
  • 00:03:55
my resources in a master class.
  • 00:03:57
And Facebook, well, Facebook I actually didn't check
  • 00:03:59
    because it's officially irrelevant,
  • 00:04:01
unless I have an old mattress to sell on Marketplace.
  • 00:04:03
    Sorry, Mark Zuckerberg.
  • 00:04:04
    It's just -- it's just what we're at now.
  • 00:04:06
    Just where we're at.
  • 00:04:07
Did you know that the digital advertising industry
  • 00:04:12
is worth $585 billion a year? That's crazy.
  • 00:04:17
Why? Why is it worth that much?
  • 00:04:19
    It's because it works.
  • 00:04:21
What they teach us to want, to invest our time,
  • 00:04:24
our energy and resources in is what we invest in.
  • 00:04:27
What they teach us to want is what we want.
  • 00:04:29
Where they teach us to go is where we end up going.
  • 00:04:31
    And why does it work?
  • 00:04:32
It's because you and me are very, very impressionable,
  • 00:04:36
or said more positively, we're by nature very teachable.
  • 00:04:40
The problem is most of those teachers in our lives,
  • 00:04:42
not the ones in classrooms, they're not talking about that.
  • 00:04:45
I'm talking about Instagram and Facebook and YouTube
  • 00:04:47
and all the messages that we receive,
  • 00:04:49
all those teachers aren't trying to give us more energy.
  • 00:04:53
They're not trying to work towards our growth.
  • 00:04:55
They're trying to take our time and our energy.
  • 00:04:58
But see this Journey, this Grow Journey,
  • 00:05:01
    it's about growing.
  • 00:05:03
It's about getting to a better place.
  • 00:05:04
It's about investing for a return.
  • 00:05:07
But their goal is the opposite:
  • 00:05:09
to take time, money, energy, attention.
  • 00:05:11
Jesus promised to give us more.
  • 00:05:13
He said we could grow and grow and grow
  • 00:05:17
until we have what He called the abundant life.
  • 00:05:30
    - Every week after the service is over,
  • 00:05:32
we go see my mom at the nursing home
  • 00:05:34
and she asks, "What's the -- what was the sermon about?"
  • 00:05:36
    And we tell her.
  • 00:05:37
    - I try to attend service on the weekends.
  • 00:05:39
    - Routine is huge for me.
  • 00:05:41
    Receiving weekly teachings
  • 00:05:43
is something that keeps me grounded
  • 00:05:44
and helps create spiritual disciplines in my life.
  • 00:05:46
    - I go to Crossroads Uptown or I'll watch online.
  • 00:05:49
    - How I receive weekly teaching
  • 00:05:51
looks like streaming the services online.
  • 00:05:54
    - Every week on Sunday nights, my family and I
  • 00:05:56
get together and we just talk about the Bible.
  • 00:05:59
    - Receiving weekly teacher really impacts my life
  • 00:06:02
in a way that reminds me that I am a model.
  • 00:06:05
I'm a model to my wife, my children, grandchildren,
  • 00:06:08
my mentees, and even my employees.
  • 00:06:10
So, people who really want to test the fruit of your walk,
  • 00:06:13
it's not just what you say,
  • 00:06:14
but it's the actions that you show.
  • 00:06:24
    - Jesus promised the abundant life was possible
  • 00:06:26
in John 10:10 when He said,
  • 00:06:29
"I came that they may have life
  • 00:06:30
    and have it abundantly."
  • 00:06:31
The question for you today is
  • 00:06:34
    who's regularly teaching you
  • 00:06:36
how to have that kind of life,
  • 00:06:37
how to have life and have it abundantly?
  • 00:06:39
Who's teaching you how to grow
  • 00:06:40
in the ways that matter the most,
  • 00:06:42
to grow in peace and hope and joy,
  • 00:06:44
and most of all, in your understanding
  • 00:06:46
of the God who created you
  • 00:06:47
to enjoy all those things and more?
  • 00:06:49
    Because you won't grow accidentally.
  • 00:06:52
You won't experience the abundant life accidentally.
  • 00:06:55
The good news today, though, is
  • 00:06:56
you don't have to guess how to grow.
  • 00:06:58
It's not, like, just hope you get it right.
  • 00:07:00
In this Journey we're looking at
  • 00:07:01
the seven proven practices that lead to growth.
  • 00:07:04
Every one of these are time tested practices
  • 00:07:07
    that date back 2000 years.
  • 00:07:09
And the specific practice we're unpacking today
  • 00:07:12
    is receiving teaching weekly.
  • 00:07:14
It's a core practice that all of the followers of Jesus
  • 00:07:18
who have grown and experience that abundant life
  • 00:07:20
that Jesus promised, they have always prioritized.
  • 00:07:23
And I think given the unprecedented amount of messages
  • 00:07:26
that we receive in the world today, shouting at us,
  • 00:07:28
    telling us what to value,
  • 00:07:30
telling us where to aim our life at,
  • 00:07:31
I think it's never been a more important practice
  • 00:07:33
    than right now.
  • 00:07:35
See, receiving teaching is giving attention.
  • 00:07:39
    In his incredible book
  • 00:07:40
    The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry,
  • 00:07:42
the theologian John Mark Comer said:
  • 00:07:59
That's a really fancy way of saying
  • 00:08:01
    you are what you eat.
  • 00:08:03
That's the same as these plants.
  • 00:08:05
If they consume good nutrients, they grow good fruit.
  • 00:08:08
    It's the same for you,
  • 00:08:10
what you eat, what you give your attention to.
  • 00:08:12
Now, do you know who knew the importance of
  • 00:08:15
carefully cultivating what you give your attention to?
  • 00:08:18
    Jesus.
  • 00:08:19
In just a minute we're going to look at
  • 00:08:20
the very first action of Jesus ever recorded,
  • 00:08:23
and spoiler alert, it's about this,
  • 00:08:25
giving your attention to receiving teaching.
  • 00:08:27
But check out the first thing that happens
  • 00:08:29
after Jesus gets baptized, which is considered
  • 00:08:32
to be the beginning of His official ministry.
  • 00:08:34
He's taken straight to the wilderness.
  • 00:08:35
He fast for 40 straight days.
  • 00:08:37
And then Satan shows up to tempt Him.
  • 00:08:39
So, if you ever thought the first 40 days
  • 00:08:41
of your new job are rough, they have nothing on this.
  • 00:08:44
    Check this out, Matthew 4:1:
  • 00:09:06
Now, I find it fascinating that
  • 00:09:08
the very first thing Jesus faced in His ministry,
  • 00:09:11
    most of which was teaching,
  • 00:09:13
    was about receiving teaching.
  • 00:09:15
And here's something critical to see in these words
  • 00:09:17
that I'm willing to bet you've never seen before.
  • 00:09:19
See, Jesus was quoting when he said, "It's written,"
  • 00:09:22
He was quoting Deuteronomy 8:3 with his answer,
  • 00:09:25
    which says this:
  • 00:09:38
See, Jesus doubled down on that message.
  • 00:09:41
He said, "You're not made to be a self feeder."
  • 00:09:43
That's the temptation that he was facing.
  • 00:09:44
"Feed yourself, Jesus. Take care of it yourself.
  • 00:09:46
Do it, do a DIY spirituality."
  • 00:09:48
But it wasn't receiving food from God.
  • 00:09:51
And Jesus was saying, "I don't live by the wisdom
  • 00:09:53
that I can whip up on my own,
  • 00:09:55
my own bread that I can make, I can feed myself.
  • 00:09:58
I live by God's wisdom that I have to receive."
  • 00:10:02
These words hit me like a shovel.
  • 00:10:04
They aimed at digging up the rock in me called pride,
  • 00:10:07
    because I'm a grownup, I'm an adult.
  • 00:10:09
I'm not supposed to need to learn anymore
  • 00:10:10
or receive teaching from somebody else.
  • 00:10:12
I'm supposed to be able to do it all myself, right?
  • 00:10:14
    Isn't that what we're taught?
  • 00:10:15
I'm done with school. I'm not a kid anymore.
  • 00:10:17
Okay, now let's talk about the first thing
  • 00:10:20
the Bible ever records Jesus doing.
  • 00:10:23
Do you know it's not teaching, but being taught?
  • 00:10:27
    Jesus was 12 years old.
  • 00:10:29
He went with His parents to Jerusalem for the Passover.
  • 00:10:31
And they they left, and His parents couldn't find Him.
  • 00:10:34
    It says in Luke 2:46:
  • 00:10:45
Okay, so fix that image in your mind.
  • 00:10:47
    The child Jesus does what?
  • 00:10:50
He sits and He listens to teachers
  • 00:10:53
and He asks them questions so that He can learn.
  • 00:10:57
Do you remember a time in your life
  • 00:10:59
when you asked a million questions,
  • 00:11:02
    even the unsafe ones,
  • 00:11:03
even the ones you're not supposed to ask?
  • 00:11:05
Well, see what happens for most of us as we age
  • 00:11:07
is that we learn the rules
  • 00:11:08
    of asking questions and learning.
  • 00:11:10
We learn which questions are okay to ask,
  • 00:11:12
    which ones we should skip.
  • 00:11:13
Eventually many of us stop asking questions altogether.
  • 00:11:18
    And the problem is,
  • 00:11:19
it's killing our ability to be taught.
  • 00:11:21
A guy named Warren Berger wrote a book about this.
  • 00:11:23
    He said:
  • 00:11:48
You know, not incidentally, there's a story
  • 00:11:50
    where Jesus was talking about
  • 00:11:52
what type of person of faith is the absolute greatest.
  • 00:11:56
    His answer might surprise you.
  • 00:11:57
    Matthew 18:3:
  • 00:12:04
I don't think that means change and become little children.
  • 00:12:07
It doesn't mean be shallow minded and naïve and silly.
  • 00:12:11
You know what a cruel trick God would be playing
  • 00:12:13
if He wanted us to be shallow minded,
  • 00:12:15
but our brains were naturally growing and maturing
  • 00:12:17
    and getting more logical.
  • 00:12:18
I don't think that's what He means at all.
  • 00:12:20
What He means is: ask me a million unfiltered questions,
  • 00:12:23
    just like a kid.
  • 00:12:25
Have a hunger and a curiosity to learn.
  • 00:12:27
Because if you want to grow, you have to have
  • 00:12:29
    that same hunger to grow
  • 00:12:31
just like you did when you were a kid.
  • 00:12:33
This Journey hinges on one thing: your hunger to grow.
  • 00:12:38
We prepared the soil, we gathered the nutrients,
  • 00:12:41
we've got the water all measured out,
  • 00:12:42
but it's up to you to dig in.
  • 00:12:44
And if you're up for it, here's how the Journey works.
  • 00:12:47
    - There are three parts to the Journey.
  • 00:12:49
    Step one: Attend the weekend
  • 00:12:52
and receive weekly teaching at a site or online.
  • 00:12:55
Get inspired with the good news.
  • 00:12:58
Step two: Do your guide work.
  • 00:13:00
You get your very own printed guide.
  • 00:13:03
It'll help you create a plan of action to grow deeper.
  • 00:13:07
And step three: meet with your group.
  • 00:13:10
During the Journey we meet in groups
  • 00:13:12
to talk about what we're learning, grow deeper together.
  • 00:13:15
    Go here for more.
  • 00:13:17
    Come Grow!
  • 00:13:22
    - Well, hey, my name is Andy Reider
  • 00:13:23
and hopefully that video was helpful for you
  • 00:13:26
to understand what it means to do
  • 00:13:27
    this thing called the Journey.
  • 00:13:29
And actually, one of the seven proven practices
  • 00:13:31
that we're going to be leaning into
  • 00:13:33
    is receive weekly teaching.
  • 00:13:35
Hey, well done. You did it.
  • 00:13:36
    - Good job. Right here, right now, you're doing it.
  • 00:13:38
    - You did it right now.
  • 00:13:39
And that's just a place to get started.
  • 00:13:41
If you're looking for more tools that can help you,
  • 00:13:44
    yeah, that's it, grow.
  • 00:13:45
Hey, just open up your Crossroads App
  • 00:13:47
and we've got more great stuff for you there.
  • 00:13:49
    - That's exactly right.
  • 00:13:50
And one of those proven practices
  • 00:13:52
that we'll talk about a little bit later
  • 00:13:54
    is through giving.
  • 00:13:55
You can also do that in the app.
  • 00:13:57
This is a pretty sweet app.
  • 00:13:58
    And you know what?
  • 00:14:00
Our giving is fueling life change everywhere.
  • 00:14:03
The simple thing to do is click your profile
  • 00:14:04
at the bottom of the screen,
  • 00:14:06
then go ahead and click that gear shift.
  • 00:14:08
And once you click it, there's a simple option to give,
  • 00:14:11
it has a little heart next to it.
  • 00:14:12
So let's hop into the message right now.
  • 00:14:16
    - Did you know Jesus is the only major religious figure
  • 00:14:20
who says, "Ask me questions so that I can teach you"?
  • 00:14:24
He said this in Luke 11.
  • 00:14:36
Jesus says, "Be like me when I was a kid.
  • 00:14:39
I want to ask a million questions."
  • 00:14:41
And who should you ask? Teachers.
  • 00:14:43
See, Jesus was trying to learn
  • 00:14:45
and not only willing to be taught,
  • 00:14:47
but He was running away from His parents
  • 00:14:49
    so He could be taught.
  • 00:14:51
Do you have that same kind of hunger to be taught,
  • 00:14:53
    to learn and to grow?
  • 00:14:54
Do you have time on your calendar at least once a week
  • 00:14:57
to run away from the rest of your life
  • 00:14:59
    and prioritize receiving teaching weekly
  • 00:15:02
    as a core practice?
  • 00:15:03
By the way, there isn't a one size fits all
  • 00:15:06
    solution for teaching.
  • 00:15:07
We know that the world has changed.
  • 00:15:08
It's going to continue to change.
  • 00:15:10
    And that's okay.
  • 00:15:11
We make these episodes intentionally shorter
  • 00:15:13
and available on demand because we want
  • 00:15:15
to give you options that work for you.
  • 00:15:17
    It's not about how long you listen;
  • 00:15:19
it's about what you do with what you learn.
  • 00:15:22
See receive doesn't just mean consume.
  • 00:15:24
That's what we're used to in today's world,
  • 00:15:26
    we consume the information.
  • 00:15:27
    Receive means apply.
  • 00:15:30
And my job as a teacher is simply to
  • 00:15:32
help deliver the Word of God to you that you need
  • 00:15:35
just like a farmhand might walk around these plants
  • 00:15:39
and give them water and fertilizer carefully prepared.
  • 00:15:42
That's the role of a teacher,
  • 00:15:45
and the word of God, it's our activator for growth.
  • 00:15:48
    Hebrews 4:12 says:
  • 00:15:50
For the Word of God is alive and active.
  • 00:15:52
Do you want activity? Do you want movement?
  • 00:15:54
    Do you want growth?
  • 00:15:55
Then you must get the Word of God
  • 00:15:57
    by receiving teaching weekly.
  • 00:15:59
And by the way, you may notice
  • 00:16:00
    how this practice builds on
  • 00:16:02
the first one that we talked about,
  • 00:16:03
    connecting with God daily.
  • 00:16:04
See, we do need time on our own
  • 00:16:07
to chew on the Word of God.
  • 00:16:08
And we need time when it's carefully prepared
  • 00:16:11
and given and taught to us,
  • 00:16:14
because we don't live on bread alone,
  • 00:16:15
but by every word from God.
  • 00:16:17
That means you're not afraid, you're not angry,
  • 00:16:21
you're not bitter, you're not hopeless,
  • 00:16:23
    you're not stuck.
  • 00:16:24
You're hungry, and what you need most
  • 00:16:27
is the food that matters the most: The Word of God.
  • 00:16:30
See, more growth is possible for you.
  • 00:16:32
It is, but only if you make a habit
  • 00:16:34
    of receiving teaching weekly.
  • 00:16:36
If you've got the hunger to grow,
  • 00:16:38
    we've got you this week.
  • 00:16:39
In your guide you're going to do an exercise
  • 00:16:42
    that's, I think, really cool.
  • 00:16:44
It will help you identify what style of learner you are,
  • 00:16:47
how you receive teaching the best.
  • 00:16:49
So, make sure you do your guide this week.
  • 00:16:51
Make sure you go to your group.
  • 00:16:53
Let me pray for you as you do those things.
  • 00:16:55
God, thank you for everybody watching.
  • 00:16:56
Give us exactly what we need to grow. Amen.
  • 00:17:03
    - Hearing Kyle talk about how the Word is alive,
  • 00:17:06
    it's just invigorating.
  • 00:17:08
Because it can seem a little dead on paper.
  • 00:17:10
    But when you apply it,
  • 00:17:12
when you take it out of the paper,
  • 00:17:13
    out of the context,
  • 00:17:14
when you move with it, it's powerful.
  • 00:17:16
    - That's right.
  • 00:17:17
There's something that happens when we,
  • 00:17:18
well, take God's Word and make it alive
  • 00:17:20
by taking it with us through the rest of our day.
  • 00:17:23
    Right? Like something special happens.
  • 00:17:25
So, I want to give you two more tools,
  • 00:17:27
two more ways that you can take that thing
  • 00:17:30
that happens with God's word and extend it out
  • 00:17:32
through the other 127 hours of your week.
  • 00:17:35
Because we're not just content, like,
  • 00:17:37
    we don't just make stuff.
  • 00:17:38
    - This can't be it. - Right, this can't be it.
  • 00:17:40
That's a good way of saying it.
  • 00:17:41
Like we're a community that you can
  • 00:17:42
fully belong to wherever you are.
  • 00:17:44
    So two things for you.
  • 00:17:45
One, we've got a thing called online prayer night.
  • 00:17:47
I'm going to tell you something,
  • 00:17:49
I'm going tell you it's on Zoom.
  • 00:17:50
And just don't -- just listen to me. It's awesome.
  • 00:17:52
    Like, it's great.
  • 00:17:53
We've seen God do amazing things
  • 00:17:55
and we've got time to worship, time to pray,
  • 00:17:57
time to connect as community coming up.
  • 00:17:59
I would love for you to join us.
  • 00:18:00
I'll be leading worship. It's going to be a great time.
  • 00:18:03
Secondly, Kyle, who you just heard from,
  • 00:18:05
he's got a podcast, a podcast called A Better Answer,
  • 00:18:08
    brand new, just dropped.
  • 00:18:09
That is a chance for him to answer
  • 00:18:12
real world questions from a 20 something, and get, like,
  • 00:18:15
real world advice for how to make God's word alive
  • 00:18:18
and active through the rest of your day.
  • 00:18:21
    - Well, you know what?
  • 00:18:22
We've got a sneak peek of what's next on Crossroads,
  • 00:18:25
because this is just the beginning.
  • 00:18:27
So, take a look right now.
  • 00:18:30
    - You know what would be really stupid
  • 00:18:31
is if you would take a light
  • 00:18:34
and put it under a basket or a bushel.
  • 00:18:37
    I wonder what's under. Oh, a light.
  • 00:18:39
Yeah. It doesn't make any sense
  • 00:18:41
for a light to be under a bushel.
  • 00:18:42
When stuff is going to grow
  • 00:18:44
    because it's exposed to light.
