Get Baptized | Grow Week 4 | Anywhere Service

Why get baptized? When we choose to be baptized it’s a public declaration that we say yes to Jesus as our savior. In this message Brian shares how long he waited to be baptized, and how it can be transformative for all of us, just like it was for him, regardless of our past or where we are in life.

  • 00:00:01
    - Okay, little babies, come along there.
  • 00:00:03
Time to grow. Time to grow.
  • 00:00:10
They say that if you you talk to plants,
  • 00:00:12
    they're actually going to grow.
  • 00:00:14
Maybe it's the carbon monoxide just kind of breathing on them.
  • 00:00:17
Say a lot of H's. Hello today.
  • 00:00:21
Well, hey, today we're talking about growth.
  • 00:00:23
Just like plants need water to grow,
  • 00:00:25
so it is that you and I need water to grow,
  • 00:00:28
specifically water that comes from baptism.
  • 00:00:31
Baptism is this external sign we give everybody
  • 00:00:35
    that mimics the internal reality
  • 00:00:37
of God having washed us internally
  • 00:00:40
and now we're going to get baptized externally.
  • 00:00:43
It's a good idea. Jesus did it. You ought to do it.
  • 00:00:53
In the Bible, we see seven practices that Jesus does.
  • 00:00:57
And when we unlock these proven practices
  • 00:01:00
in our own lives, we grow, we advance,
  • 00:01:03
we go to the next place, we feel closer to God.
  • 00:01:05
Each week of the series, we will be looking at
  • 00:01:08
a different one of the seven proven practices
  • 00:01:10
and figuring out how to apply to our individual lives.
  • 00:01:18
    - Let's talk baptism.
  • 00:01:20
    - I was baptized in 2013.
  • 00:01:22
    - My mom and I were baptized in our white robes
  • 00:01:25
in the pool at the church on the same day.
  • 00:01:27
    - I was baptized April 14th
  • 00:01:29
alongside my best friend David and my mentor, Josh.
  • 00:01:39
    - I was baptized when I was 14 years old.
  • 00:01:41
It was an important step for me
  • 00:01:43
because I knew it symbolized life change.
  • 00:01:46
    - I haven't been baptized yet, but I would really like to
  • 00:01:49
and I'm looking forward to it at some point.
  • 00:01:51
    - When I was baptized at 28,
  • 00:01:53
    I -- I don't think I really understood it.
  • 00:01:55
In my forties, the Lord told me to get baptized.
  • 00:02:00
And this particular time my husband actually baptized me.
  • 00:02:04
    - I was baptized as a baby in a Catholic church
  • 00:02:07
and then once again in college.
  • 00:02:08
For me, baptism was a choice to publicly declare
  • 00:02:11
    that Jesus was my Lord.
  • 00:02:14
    - Hey, my name is Andy.
  • 00:02:15
I remember when I got baptized. Shep, do you?
  • 00:02:17
    - Crazy. I absolutely.
  • 00:02:19
You know what? When was that for you?
  • 00:02:20
    - It was actually December 31st, 1999.
  • 00:02:24
    - Why? Why?
  • 00:02:26
    - It was Y2K. It was an uncertain time.
  • 00:02:28
    No, but for real.
  • 00:02:29
It was a time where there was just, like,
  • 00:02:31
an amazing explosion of, like, growth in my spiritual life.
  • 00:02:35
And that culminated with this experience of baptism.
  • 00:02:38
It was amazing. I'll never forget it.
  • 00:02:40
    - Yeah. And you know why was amazing?
  • 00:02:42
It was because it was a step in faith.
  • 00:02:44
It was a step towards Jesus.
  • 00:02:46
And you know what that step is for folks
  • 00:02:48
who have accepted Jesus and for the first time
  • 00:02:51
    declare that in their lives.
  • 00:02:52
And so, if you're thinking about that, man,
  • 00:02:54
hey, stick around. We've got more for you.
  • 00:02:55
But you know what else is a step of faith
  • 00:02:57
that I have to say this because
  • 00:02:59
it's also fueled growth in my life.
  • 00:03:00
    - That's right. - That's giving.
  • 00:03:02
    You can go to Crossroads.net/give,
  • 00:03:04
not just to give, but to learn how and why we give
  • 00:03:07
and what that money goes towards.
  • 00:03:08
I encourage you to do that.
  • 00:03:10
And we can go to Brian right now to learn more.
  • 00:03:18
    - Jesus actually got baptized.
  • 00:03:20
Now, His baptism was a little different
  • 00:03:24
than the baptism of you or of me.
  • 00:03:27
When I got baptized, I was undergoing a ritual
  • 00:03:32
where the water was in effect, drowning me.
  • 00:03:35
I was going under the water, water was drowning me.
  • 00:03:38
I was basically in a watery grave
  • 00:03:40
and I was coming up out, rising to new life,
  • 00:03:44
which is what happens when Jesus comes up
  • 00:03:46
out of the grave and does resurrection.
  • 00:03:48
There's a lot of powerful imagery there.
  • 00:03:50
But when I got baptized, I had to recognize
  • 00:03:52
that I had sin in my life that needed to be atone for.
  • 00:03:55
And I was publicly declaring that that's
  • 00:03:57
what was taking place right then and there,
  • 00:03:59
Jesus had already done that for me.
  • 00:04:01
Now when Jesus gets baptized, it's a little different.
  • 00:04:03
His cousin is baptizing the nation of Israel.
  • 00:04:07
People are coming out into the wilderness
  • 00:04:08
    and he's baptizing them.
  • 00:04:09
And let's go ahead and read what it says, Matthew 3:
  • 00:04:53
When Jesus goes out to get baptized,
  • 00:04:55
his cousin John doesn't want to do it.
  • 00:05:00
He's like, "Man, I don't need you to be baptized
  • 00:05:03
because baptism is a sign of repentance.
  • 00:05:06
It's a sign of wanting to turn a corner."
  • 00:05:09
And Jesus never needed repent for anything.
  • 00:05:12
He was God. He never needed to turn a corner.
  • 00:05:14
    He had never actually sinned.
  • 00:05:16
So John is saying, "Whoa, man, whoa, whoa.
  • 00:05:19
    Not you, not you."
  • 00:05:20
    But Jesus does this because
  • 00:05:23
    he's identifying with all righteousness.
  • 00:05:26
John's baptism is one where Jews are coming out
  • 00:05:29
and recognizing they need to repent,
  • 00:05:30
    coming out to the wilderness.
  • 00:05:32
And so Jesus wanted fulfill all righteousness
  • 00:05:34
and identify with the Jewish people,
  • 00:05:38
models what it's like to be baptized.
  • 00:05:41
When I got baptized, my baptism meant
  • 00:05:44
I went down in the water.
  • 00:05:45
While I was under the water,
  • 00:05:47
it was like my sin was left there.
  • 00:05:49
I went into the watery grave
  • 00:05:51
and as I came up out of the water,
  • 00:05:53
it was like Jesus coming out of the grave,
  • 00:05:56
I was coming out to a new life.
  • 00:05:58
    This is what baptism means.
  • 00:06:01
Here's what's really, really cool about Jesus's baptism.
  • 00:06:04
It says that when he gets baptized,
  • 00:06:07
again, if you want to be like Jesus,
  • 00:06:10
you have to do what Jesus did, and that is get baptized.
  • 00:06:15
When He gets baptized, he hears a voice
  • 00:06:19
and it's his Heavenly Father saying,
  • 00:06:20
"This is my Son and whom I'm well pleased."
  • 00:06:24
You might read that and you might think,
  • 00:06:26
"Well, my Son, in whom I'm well pleased.
  • 00:06:28
Oh, of course, of course, God would be pleased
  • 00:06:31
with Jesus because he never did anything wrong.
  • 00:06:33
What Father wouldn't be pleased with his son
  • 00:06:35
if he'd never done anything wrong?"
  • 00:06:37
But really, what it's saying there
  • 00:06:38
    in the original language is
  • 00:06:40
this is my son who makes me happy.
  • 00:06:46
I don't think that it is his performance
  • 00:06:49
in those first 30 years of life that makes God happy.
  • 00:06:53
I think the fact that he is his Son makes God happy.
  • 00:06:58
You as his child, you make God happy.
  • 00:07:01
And when you choose to do something that grows you
  • 00:07:07
or identifies with Jesus, such as baptism,
  • 00:07:11
    you make God happy.
  • 00:07:14
I don't know if you've ever considered before
  • 00:07:16
that baptism, if you've never been baptized before,
  • 00:07:18
is a way to make God happy.
  • 00:07:21
Not baptism that your parents did for you
  • 00:07:24
maybe at some church way, way long time ago
  • 00:07:26
when you were still pooping in your diapers.
  • 00:07:28
I'm talking about now as a person
  • 00:07:31
    who can think choosing Jesus,
  • 00:07:34
willing to look wet in front of a bunch of people
  • 00:07:37
and turn away from the stuff that was in your past
  • 00:07:40
and to come to relation with him.
  • 00:07:42
That's baptism. That's a massive part of growth.
  • 00:07:45
If you haven't done that yet,
  • 00:07:46
that is the next thing for you to grow
  • 00:07:50
    and become more like Jesus.
  • 00:07:52
    That's this person's story.
  • 00:07:55
    - So we're here with Christopher,
  • 00:07:57
who's just made the decision recently
  • 00:07:59
to cross over this barrier and get baptized.
  • 00:08:02
    I want to know why.
  • 00:08:03
What is God doing in your life
  • 00:08:05
that would lead you to this point?
  • 00:08:06
So, maybe just start us back, kind of who you were
  • 00:08:09
or what your life was like before coming to faith in Jesus.
  • 00:08:13
    - Jesus Christ has come into my heart
  • 00:08:16
and I have realized that He is my Savior.
  • 00:08:18
And part of my prayer and intention with this
  • 00:08:21
is proclaiming this to the world.
  • 00:08:23
    - Okay, so prior to coming to faith in Jesus,
  • 00:08:26
you said you had a spiritual practice in life
  • 00:08:29
    that didn't include Jesus
  • 00:08:30
or He wasn't the center point of that, right?
  • 00:08:32
    - He wasn't the center.
  • 00:08:34
    I've had Jesus Christ secondary.
  • 00:08:37
I realized that He needs to be central
  • 00:08:39
in my spiritual practice because I'm a therapist.
  • 00:08:42
I work at a temporary shelter,
  • 00:08:45
so I get to live out my faith
  • 00:08:46
by serving the poor every day.
  • 00:08:48
And it's just re-energized my spiritual practice.
  • 00:08:52
I've had spiritual experiences, like, day in and day out,
  • 00:08:56
because I'm hearing the truth about the Bible and Jesus.
  • 00:09:00
I know it's my truth and I want other people
  • 00:09:03
to have the experience that I have.
  • 00:09:05
Nothing that I did, per se.
  • 00:09:08
    It's just that I'm open
  • 00:09:09
and allowed Grace to move through me.
  • 00:09:12
    - That's incredible. Anything else you want to say?
  • 00:09:14
You're just ready? All right, let's do it.
  • 00:09:48
    - God, thank you for what you've done in this man's life.
  • 00:09:50
Thank you for the awakening that you've given him.
  • 00:09:53
Thank you for the way you've been talking to him every day.
  • 00:09:55
And I'm asking you to not stop that.
  • 00:09:57
All right, Christopher, who's your Lord and Savior?
  • 00:10:00
    - Jesus Christ. - All right.
  • 00:10:02
I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • 00:10:08
    Whoo! - Congratulations, man.
  • 00:10:11
    Thank you.
  • 00:11:08
    - That is a huge step.
  • 00:11:11
That's a person who's growing and is feeling closer to God.
  • 00:11:15
I waited an embarrassingly long period of time to get baptized.
  • 00:11:21
My parents had baptized me when I was a little baby.
  • 00:11:23
By the way, I'm not anti infant baptism.
  • 00:11:27
Some people are anti infant baptism.
  • 00:11:29
    They'd rather do dedication.
  • 00:11:31
I don't want to explain all those nuances.
  • 00:11:33
Fine. Do whatever you want with your kids. That's cool.
  • 00:11:35
But I realized whether or not I was baptized
  • 00:11:38
as an infant or not, that was my parents' decision.
  • 00:11:40
    That wasn't my decision.
  • 00:11:42
All the examples in the Book of Acts,
  • 00:11:44
    all the examples after Jesus
  • 00:11:46
    were all them getting baptized.
  • 00:11:48
And I thought, I ought to make an aggressive move,
  • 00:11:50
not just verify and justify what happened way back when
  • 00:11:53
that I was passive in, but actually
  • 00:11:56
take control of my life and grow.
  • 00:11:58
Now, the embarrassing thing about it was
  • 00:12:00
I was a pastor at Crossroads, had started Crossroads,
  • 00:12:04
and had baptized people at Crossroads.
  • 00:12:06
And it came up to a guy who I told my story to
  • 00:12:09
and he came to know Christ.
  • 00:12:11
    His name is Mike.
  • 00:12:12
He's still a very, very close friend of mine today,
  • 00:12:14
or Mikey, as I call him.
  • 00:12:17
    He was getting baptized
  • 00:12:18
and some other people I was discipling
  • 00:12:19
and I realized, "Man, I just need to do this right now.
  • 00:12:23
I need to get baptized right now."
  • 00:12:24
    And the voices started,
  • 00:12:26
"Oh, but you're going to look like you're a hypocrite.
  • 00:12:29
How are you going to explain how you're a pastor
  • 00:12:31
    and you haven't been baptized?
  • 00:12:33
What about the people who have been baptized by you,
  • 00:12:35
are they going to think their baptism wasn't legitimate?"
  • 00:12:37
    What about all these things?
  • 00:12:39
And the bottom line end of day was,
  • 00:12:42
I don't care about those questions.
  • 00:12:44
What I care about is growing.
  • 00:12:46
And this is a significant and important moment
  • 00:12:48
for me to grow in my walk with Christ.
  • 00:12:52
    Do you want to grow?
  • 00:12:54
Are you wanting to get closer to Christ?
  • 00:12:56
    Have you been baptized?
  • 00:12:57
    This is a critical thing
  • 00:13:00
because it tells everybody, "I'm different.
  • 00:13:04
I'm driving my stake in the ground and this is who I am."
  • 00:13:08
    Getting baptized is like,
  • 00:13:10
it's like changing your status on Facebook,
  • 00:13:13
    except it means something.
  • 00:13:15
    It means something in eternity.
  • 00:13:16
And everybody else realizes, "Whoa, whoa."
  • 00:13:21
I've known missionaries and pastors who baptize
  • 00:13:23
in the middle of the ice in Yugoslavia,
  • 00:13:27
in Poland, in the Soviet Union, excuse me, in Russia,
  • 00:13:32
because the people say, "I don't want to let
  • 00:13:36
a little bit of cold water hold me back
  • 00:13:38
from following in the line of the spiritual greats
  • 00:13:42
who've gone before me and have grown."
  • 00:13:44
And yet we in the States are like, "Oh, I don't know.
  • 00:13:48
I don't know if I want to get wet publicly.
  • 00:13:50
Oh, but I didn't bring any clothes with me
  • 00:13:52
    to change into.
  • 00:13:53
Oh, what if people see me, and I --"
  • 00:13:56
    Hey, look, man, look, man,
  • 00:13:58
there comes a moment in your growth.
  • 00:14:00
We've got to want to grow simply for
  • 00:14:02
the cause of being more like Christ.
  • 00:14:05
    And that means getting uncomfortable.
  • 00:14:08
    Growth always means un-comfortability.
  • 00:14:10
You're going to change your patterns.
  • 00:14:12
You're going to change your habits.
  • 00:14:14
You're going to change your mindsets.
  • 00:14:15
You're going to turn your back on things.
  • 00:14:17
And you're going to do things that other people
  • 00:14:19
aren't going to want to do,
  • 00:14:20
like get submerged in a tub of water
  • 00:14:23
in front of a bunch of people
  • 00:14:24
and come up with your clothes and your hair
  • 00:14:26
and your head and everything else wet.
  • 00:14:28
    But it's beautiful, it's glorious.
  • 00:14:31
It's one of those transcendent mountaintop experiences
  • 00:14:36
    that we get to experience.
  • 00:14:38
And Jesus set us up for this.
  • 00:14:40
In the book of Matthew 28.
  • 00:14:42
We're spending a lot of time in Matthew.
  • 00:14:44
Jesus tells people in what's known as
  • 00:14:46
The Great Commission to go into all the world
  • 00:14:50
baptizing them in the name of
  • 00:14:52
the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:14:54
Baptizing them, going out, not going to all the world
  • 00:14:57
and just teach people about Jesus,
  • 00:14:58
not going to all the world
  • 00:14:59
and just get people to read the Bible.
  • 00:15:02
    Not going all the world
  • 00:15:03
and get people to have personal time with God.
  • 00:15:05
    All those things are fine.
  • 00:15:06
But go into the world baptizing people
  • 00:15:10
in the name of the Father, the son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:15:14
    That means you.
  • 00:15:16
As we're going through the Journey
  • 00:15:18
and you're going through your books,
  • 00:15:19
    you're writing down things like:
  • 00:15:21
I've been baptized, I need to be baptized,
  • 00:15:23
    I was baptized.
  • 00:15:25
I get the question pretty frequently,
  • 00:15:26
what happens if I was baptized some time ago?
  • 00:15:29
    I made the decision.
  • 00:15:31
My parents didn't make the decision.
  • 00:15:32
I made the decision, but there's been a lot of stuff
  • 00:15:35
that's happened since then and looking back on it,
  • 00:15:37
maybe I was a still 12 year old.
  • 00:15:39
I didn't know what was happening.
  • 00:15:40
Maybe it was like ten years ago,
  • 00:15:43
but I've gone through a lot of rebellion
  • 00:15:45
and heinous sin and just some really, really bad stuff.
  • 00:15:47
    Well, what about me?
  • 00:15:50
I think one baptism does it.
  • 00:15:52
But here's what I also know.
  • 00:15:53
I also know that God honors
  • 00:15:57
    assertive, aggressive moves for growth.
  • 00:15:59
He honors that. He likes that.
  • 00:16:02
I think it's good to make an aggressive move
  • 00:16:03
and just go, "Man, I just think this would be
  • 00:16:05
    meaningful to me right now.
  • 00:16:07
I need to do it right now, even though I did it some time."
  • 00:16:09
Do it, do it, do it, do it.
  • 00:16:11
Now, if we see at Crossroads coming up,
  • 00:16:13
like this is your annual tradition,
  • 00:16:14
someone's going to say, "Oh, hold on, hold on.
  • 00:16:17
    That's what Christmas is for.
  • 00:16:18
    Baptism isn't for annual traditions.
  • 00:16:20
That's what Christmas is for and communion.
  • 00:16:21
    But not this."
  • 00:16:22
But hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
  • 00:16:24
Take your growth by the throat
  • 00:16:28
and marched up to the baptismal font right now.
  • 00:16:30
Get there. Get there to the tub.
  • 00:16:32
Figure out how to do that right now
  • 00:16:35
and your father will be happy.
  • 00:16:41
    - Hey, I hope that you heard that baptism
  • 00:16:43
is a really big deal, and it's an important step,
  • 00:16:46
    and it's available to you.
  • 00:16:49
It's not for, like, the spiritually elite
  • 00:16:51
    or the perfect.
  • 00:16:53
It's, man, it's for everyone who understands
  • 00:16:56
    that they have been saved.
  • 00:16:57
So, maybe you've never been baptized.
  • 00:16:59
Maybe you were baptized as a kid and, like,
  • 00:17:01
that wasn't really your decision to make.
  • 00:17:04
Whatever the case is, we want to help you
  • 00:17:06
    experience this for yourself.
  • 00:17:09
We want to help you experience this wherever you are.
  • 00:17:11
So reach out. Let us know.
  • 00:17:13
Like, we don't just make content.
  • 00:17:16
We want to be there for you to nudge and encourage
  • 00:17:19
and walk with you on your spiritual journey.
  • 00:17:22
And if we can do that by helping you get baptized
  • 00:17:25
wherever you live all over the world,
  • 00:17:27
hey, let us know. We want to be a part of that.
  • 00:17:30
    - That's exactly right.
  • 00:17:31
And we're in the Journey. If you need more info,
  • 00:17:33
you still haven't gotten your guide. That's okay.
  • 00:17:35
You can go to Crossroads.net/Journey because
  • 00:17:37
being in a group, doing this content,
  • 00:17:39
that's what's going to lead to growth.
  • 00:17:41
But before you leave, I want you to check out
  • 00:17:43
what's happening next week on Crossroads.
  • 00:17:47
    - What was the most important tool in Jesus's ministry
  • 00:17:50
in the history of the church?
  • 00:17:52
Was it giant cathedrals? Was it stained glass windows?
  • 00:17:56
Was it fog machines, sound systems?
  • 00:17:58
    What about lasers?
  • 00:17:59
No, it's this: food and drink.
  • 00:18:04
Eating and drinking was a key to Jesus life and work.
  • 00:18:07
In fact, Jesus used food and drink
  • 00:18:10
and meals around tables to change the world.
  • 00:18:13
    And you can to.
