00:00:01
- Welcome to Crossroads and
welcome to the Grow Journey.
-
00:00:04
I'm Brian.
-
00:00:05
Before we get started, just what
exactly is this Journey thing?
-
00:00:11
Well, let me start
with the word "grow."
-
00:00:14
In the Bible, we see seven
practices that Jesus does.
-
00:00:18
And when we unlock these proven
practices in our own lives,
-
00:00:21
we grow, we advance,
we go to the next place,
-
00:00:24
we feel closer to God.
-
00:00:26
Each week of this series,
we will be looking at
-
00:00:29
a different one of the
seven proven practices
-
00:00:31
and figuring out how to
apply to our individual lives.
-
00:00:34
That's the grow part.
-
00:00:36
The Journey part means
-
00:00:37
that we're going on
a journey together,
-
00:00:40
a bunch of people going
step by step through a process
-
00:00:44
of self discovery and
sharpening one another
-
00:00:47
and sensing God moment
by moment, week by week.
-
00:00:52
As a church, we're all doing it,
-
00:00:54
and we do it by
meeting in groups
-
00:00:56
and going through the guidebook,
-
00:00:57
as well as having
something to see online
-
00:01:00
or in a building.
-
00:01:01
We'll show you how to
do that later in the episode.
-
00:01:04
I'm glad you're watching.
-
00:01:06
And I believe if you engage,
-
00:01:07
you're going to
grow closer to God
-
00:01:09
in the next 20 minutes.
-
00:01:10
Now let's get started.
-
00:01:14
If you're happy with
the way your life is going,
-
00:01:16
just keep doing what
you're doing right now.
-
00:01:18
But if you want something
different for your life,
-
00:01:21
you're going have to
do something different
-
00:01:22
in your life.
-
00:01:24
That's what this Journey
is about. It's about growing.
-
00:01:27
And when I want to get some
place where I'm not right now,
-
00:01:29
I'm going to do something
that I'm not doing right now.
-
00:01:33
We're going to walk together
-
00:01:36
through the process
of how you grow.
-
00:01:53
Around me are familiar faces
-
00:01:58
worn out places worn out faces
-
00:02:04
Bright and early
for the daily race
-
00:02:09
going nowhere, going nowhere.
-
00:02:16
I find it hard to tell you
-
00:02:18
I find it hard to take
-
00:02:22
When people run in circles
-
00:02:24
It's a very, very mad world,
-
00:02:33
mad world
-
00:02:38
Little darlin',
I feel that ice is thawing
-
00:02:46
Little darlin', it feels like
years since it's been here
-
00:02:55
Here comes the sun,
-
00:02:59
Here comes the sun,
-
00:03:04
Here comes the sun,
-
00:03:08
Here comes the sun,
-
00:03:13
Here comes the sun,
-
00:03:18
Here comes the sun,
-
00:03:23
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes,
-
00:03:32
Little darlin', the smile's
returning to their faces
-
00:03:39
Little darlin', it seems like
years since it's been here
-
00:03:46
Here comes the sun
-
00:03:50
Here comes the sun,
-
00:03:53
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
-
00:04:00
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
-
00:04:07
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
-
00:04:14
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
-
00:04:31
- How do I have
daily time with God?
-
00:04:34
- I start my morning off with
a cup of coffee and my Bible.
-
00:04:37
- I take a 10,000 step
walk with God every day.
-
00:04:41
I just call it my prayer walk.
-
00:04:43
- When I have my
phone out and I'm praying,
-
00:04:45
I'm just typing in my
notepad and I'm talking to God
-
00:04:49
and it actually feels
like I'm texting God.
-
00:05:02
- I love spending my
daily time worshiping.
-
00:05:05
I love spending the
morning singing, worshiping,
-
00:05:08
and just asking God
what He wants to speak.
-
00:05:11
- Sometimes I like to
pick a chapter of the Bible
-
00:05:13
that I never read before.
-
00:05:15
- In the morning before
my sister and I go to school,
-
00:05:17
my family does a
devotional together.
-
00:05:27
- What you do every
day dictates your day
-
00:05:32
and delivers your life.
-
00:05:34
That's what we're
talking about today.
-
00:05:35
Hey, I'm Brian.
Welcome to Crossroads.
-
00:05:38
I'm in a chair that I
sit in every morning.
-
00:05:42
Well, I say every morning.
-
00:05:44
There's a few mornings
here and there I miss.
-
00:05:46
But this is a habit.
-
00:05:48
It's a routine that
happens with me every day.
-
00:05:50
Every day I get up
and I sit in this chair
-
00:05:53
and I spend time with God.
-
00:05:55
That's what we're
looking at today:
-
00:05:57
How to have daily time with God.
-
00:06:00
In the Book of Matthew
6:11, it says this.
-
00:06:05
And you may have -- you may
have heard this verse before.
-
00:06:08
You may have prayed
this verse before.
-
00:06:10
It's kind of crazy,
a lot of high schools
-
00:06:13
still use this verse
-
00:06:15
in a football locker
room before a game.
-
00:06:18
It doesn't make any sense
to me in a football context,
-
00:06:20
but, hey, if it works for
you, great, it works for you.
-
00:06:23
I'm not going to read it.
-
00:06:24
I'm just going to quote it the
way I remember learning it.
-
00:06:27
Our Father, who art in
heaven, hallowed be thy name.
-
00:06:31
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
-
00:06:33
on earth as it is in Heaven.
-
00:06:35
Give us this day
our daily bread,
-
00:06:37
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
-
00:06:40
And us not in temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
-
00:06:43
For Yours is the
Kingdom and the power
-
00:06:45
and the glory forever. Amen.
-
00:06:48
This is known as
the Lord's Prayer.
-
00:06:50
It's the prayer that Jesus
taught His disciples to pray.
-
00:06:54
It has all the elements
in it to get you
-
00:06:58
and your day
going the right way,
-
00:06:59
especially the part I
want to focus on right now.
-
00:07:01
It said: Give us this
day our daily bread.
-
00:07:08
I know people who have
these little lizards as pets.
-
00:07:11
It doesn't make
sense to me either.
-
00:07:13
Praying the Lord's Prayer
-
00:07:14
before you go crush
the other team in football.
-
00:07:16
That doesn't make
a lot of sense,
-
00:07:18
but if it works for you, great.
-
00:07:19
Another thing I don't understand
is like having a pet lizard.
-
00:07:22
I don't understand that one.
-
00:07:23
But that works
for you, that's fine.
-
00:07:25
Some lizards, they will only eat
-
00:07:28
if you give them two
portions of food every day
-
00:07:30
because they always
want to make sure they have
-
00:07:32
one portion of food that's
right there at all times.
-
00:07:36
When Jesus talks
about daily bread,
-
00:07:39
that Jewish audience
remembered way, way, way back
-
00:07:43
in their national history,
God would bring manna.
-
00:07:46
Every day manna would
come down from heaven
-
00:07:50
and it would fill up the ground
-
00:07:51
and they would
be able to eat that.
-
00:07:52
And then they
would go on their day,
-
00:07:54
and the next day more
manna will come down.
-
00:07:56
Only enough manna
could they take for that day.
-
00:07:59
They weren't lizards.
-
00:08:00
They couldn't store it away.
-
00:08:02
Only enough for that day.
-
00:08:04
This lizard, apparently,
from I understand it,
-
00:08:07
won't eat unless it sees
it has two days food.
-
00:08:10
I find that with us
God doesn't deliver us
-
00:08:13
multiple food for a
week's time in one setting.
-
00:08:16
We have to go to God every
day to just get what we need.
-
00:08:21
That's what Jesus
is talking about,
-
00:08:23
about give us this
day our daily bread.
-
00:08:27
God wants to give
you enough this day
-
00:08:30
to get you through this day.
-
00:08:33
And this day will
dictate your destiny.
-
00:08:36
And this time, in this
chair dictates my day.
-
00:08:41
It's important when you
have time with God to just
-
00:08:43
know where it is I'm going
to spend time with God
-
00:08:48
and what time of day I'm
going to spend time with God.
-
00:08:50
I like spending time
with God in the mornings.
-
00:08:52
There's some biblical
precedent for that.
-
00:08:55
But the most important
thing is knowing
-
00:08:57
what time in the day you're
going to meet with God
-
00:09:02
and where you're
going to meet with God.
-
00:09:06
I've got this
chair that I sit in
-
00:09:08
and I try to only
sit in this chair
-
00:09:10
when I'm going to
actually meet with God.
-
00:09:12
If I want to surf the web,
I'll go to another chair
-
00:09:14
because I want this
chair to cue me up
-
00:09:17
to when I sit down it's
kind of like a keystone habit.
-
00:09:19
All of the other start
falling in place where I say,
-
00:09:22
"Oh, this is time with God time.
-
00:09:24
That's what I'm
doing right now."
-
00:09:26
When I get into this place, I
want to do a couple of things.
-
00:09:29
I want to read the Bible
-
00:09:31
or I want to read
the Crossroads App
-
00:09:33
that actually has
the Bible in the app.
-
00:09:35
I want to read that and
see might I read something
-
00:09:40
that God's going to give me?
-
00:09:42
When I get something from God,
-
00:09:44
I often times want
to write it down.
-
00:09:47
Most recent years, my
journals have been electronic,
-
00:09:50
digital because I'm on my phone,
-
00:09:51
so I have been using
my phone for my journal.
-
00:09:54
But recently I've been
going back to old school.
-
00:09:56
Old school paper, like this
is right here the Journal I use
-
00:10:02
and put stuff in and
you can see I got stuff,
-
00:10:05
I just write it in.
It's where it is.
-
00:10:08
And there have been day
after day, week after week,
-
00:10:12
month after month,
year after year,
-
00:10:14
decade after decade of journals.
-
00:10:17
I've got just a list of these,
-
00:10:19
a variety of these right
here from previous years.
-
00:10:24
Oh, I don't even
know what year this is.
-
00:10:26
This is just a
random assortment.
-
00:10:28
Let's see, maybe -- maybe
do a little journal roulette.
-
00:10:31
Let's just see what I
said on a specific day.
-
00:10:33
Let's go here.
-
00:10:36
Okay. This is 7/15.
-
00:10:42
It doesn't even tell
me what year it was.
-
00:10:43
Well, let's start at
the beginning of it.
-
00:10:45
7/15, I'm going to
guess this is about 1992.
-
00:10:49
Here's what it says,
"Good morning, Lord.
-
00:10:52
The quietness is great,"
-
00:10:53
because it's always
quiet in the morning.
-
00:10:55
"Interesting insight to
Mark 6, where Jesus --
-
00:11:00
where Jesus feeds
5000 people with bread
-
00:11:02
and then walks on the water.
-
00:11:04
Both of these things
are mosaic in nature.
-
00:11:07
Moses was around."
That's fascinating.
-
00:11:09
God led me to this right
here to share with you,
-
00:11:11
because this was in
my journal decades ago.
-
00:11:15
Moses was the leadership
when the Manna came down
-
00:11:19
and then Moses split
the water with the staff
-
00:11:22
and Jesus walks on water.
-
00:11:23
He's tying into all the
great leaders of the past.
-
00:11:27
"Having just cross
reference Jesus's words
-
00:11:29
of taking up our cross,
which is in Psalms 49 as well,
-
00:11:32
I'm again reminded and convicted
-
00:11:34
to not pursue love
of earthly things.
-
00:11:38
You alone can bring
my soil satisfaction
-
00:11:42
and brings
significance to my life."
-
00:11:44
Oh, my gosh.
-
00:11:45
I pick one about you
bring my soil satisfaction
-
00:11:48
while I'm in a
freaking greenhouse
-
00:11:49
where there's soils all over.?
-
00:11:51
Let me tell you that I believe
God had me right this here,
-
00:11:55
right then, way back when,
-
00:11:57
knowing I was going to
randomly pull this one out
-
00:11:59
to help his children,
which is you right now.
-
00:12:03
So, you know that journal
entry that Brian just opened up?
-
00:12:06
- Hey, you need to know that
that was totally not planned.
-
00:12:10
That was like one
of those beautiful,
-
00:12:12
serendipitous things that
just happen sometimes,
-
00:12:16
not planned, totally
happened right in the moment.
-
00:12:19
- The soil of your
life, that's your heart.
-
00:12:23
Are you tending the
soil of your heart?
-
00:12:27
Are you breaking up
the things in your heart
-
00:12:29
and your mind to be able to
have fresh seeds from God
-
00:12:32
that come inside of your heart?
-
00:12:35
This is why every day, every day
-
00:12:39
you have to get with God.
-
00:12:41
Every day you've
got to meet with Him.
-
00:12:43
Every day you've
got to see if He's got
-
00:12:45
some bread for you that day
to get you through that day,
-
00:12:48
or even to plant seeds
the might bear fruit
-
00:12:52
even decades in the future,
-
00:12:54
like this journal did
right here, right now.
-
00:12:57
Let's take a break.
Let's hear this.
-
00:13:01
- To hear Brian talk about
connect with God daily
-
00:13:04
is so encouraging because it
reminds me that it's a practice.
-
00:13:08
And you know what?
Something about practice, Kyle.
-
00:13:10
You've got to practice even
when you don't feel like it
-
00:13:13
because you want to grow.
And that's my story.
-
00:13:15
Sometimes every day I'm like,
-
00:13:16
"Oh, do I need to
put in the hours?
-
00:13:17
Do I need to put in the work?"
-
00:13:19
But I know that's the only
thing that leads to growth.
-
00:13:21
You've got to do it.
-
00:13:22
- I -- look, there's seven
proven practices, right?
-
00:13:24
They're all they're all
important. They're all.
-
00:13:26
- Yeah.
- They're all great.
-
00:13:28
If I'm honest, I
think this one's, like,
-
00:13:30
at the foundation for me.
- Absolutely.
-
00:13:32
- If this is happening,
everything else is happening,
-
00:13:35
everything else makes sense.
-
00:13:36
It's when I stop
connecting with God daily,
-
00:13:39
where I start to drift and
things just kind of get off.
-
00:13:41
- Try to reconnect
with yourself daily,
-
00:13:43
your own desires
and your own things.
-
00:13:44
That's what you do daily.
- Right.
-
00:13:46
- You don't put that under
the submission of God.
-
00:13:48
It's good.
-
00:13:49
- I remember things, like,
God is good. He is for me.
-
00:13:51
- That's right.
- He's my provider. - Yeah.
-
00:13:53
- And that kind of thought
process, that's essential
-
00:13:55
because that's what
enables me to go, like,
-
00:13:57
"Oh, right, you know
what? God gives to me.
-
00:13:59
I want to be like Him. I
want to give to other people.
-
00:14:02
- I see how you through
that other practice in there.
-
00:14:04
I like that.
-
00:14:06
- Hey, if you want to jump in,
-
00:14:08
if you want to give to
Crossroads, we would love that.
-
00:14:10
It helps support this and
so much amazing work
-
00:14:12
that happens around the world.
-
00:14:14
You've just got to go to
Crossroads.net/give and jump in.
-
00:14:17
- That's right.
And let's head back to Brian
-
00:14:19
as he continues to talk about
connecting with God daily.
-
00:14:26
- Your decision on
what you do every day
-
00:14:32
will impact your destiny.
-
00:14:35
Jesus was as great
as he was, in part
-
00:14:38
because of what
He did every day.
-
00:14:42
And we see every day
He would get with His God.
-
00:14:45
Now, sometimes
when we get with God,
-
00:14:48
there isn't lights and whistles.
-
00:14:50
Sometimes there isn't anything.
-
00:14:53
It's just, like, we
sat there and read
-
00:14:55
and did some things that
we wouldn't do during the day.
-
00:14:57
That happens a lot, actually.
-
00:14:59
But you have no shot, no
shot of hearing from God
-
00:15:02
and building
ourselves spiritually
-
00:15:04
if you don't do that.
-
00:15:06
Jesus, in the Book of Mark 1:35,
-
00:15:08
we see this was a
daily thing for Him.
-
00:15:10
Here's what says:
-
00:15:39
Very early in the
morning while it was dark
-
00:15:41
He was off by Himself.
-
00:15:42
The implication,
understanding here is
-
00:15:44
this is what He
did in the mornings.
-
00:15:46
He carved out time
and He got with God.
-
00:15:49
And they couldn't find Him.
-
00:15:50
They were like, "Hey,
dude, we got stuff to do.
-
00:15:52
Chop, chop, let's go.
We got places to go.
-
00:15:55
People want to see us."
-
00:15:56
Jesus says, "Oh,
people want to see me.
-
00:15:58
They want me to be a
productivity machine over here?
-
00:16:01
Okay, I'm going to
go over here instead."
-
00:16:03
This is what we do.
-
00:16:05
We're like, "Hey, man,
I got stuff to do today.
-
00:16:07
Chop, chop, chop. People
want to hear from me.
-
00:16:09
People want to inform me
on my social media feed.
-
00:16:11
I've got projects
to check off my list.
-
00:16:13
I got stuff to do,
I got stuff to do."
-
00:16:15
And we choose those things
-
00:16:17
instead of meeting with
the God who created us
-
00:16:21
and is in charge of those things
-
00:16:23
and can change those things.
-
00:16:26
But He can only
change those things
-
00:16:28
if He's got our full
attention, our full heart,
-
00:16:31
our full power engaged.
-
00:16:33
All of these plants
that are here,
-
00:16:36
every single one of them,
they look really good.
-
00:16:39
You know why they look good?
-
00:16:41
Because someone is
coming in here every day
-
00:16:44
and making sure they look good.
-
00:16:46
Someone's coming in
here and weeding things
-
00:16:49
and they're watering things.
-
00:16:50
They're making sure
everything is right.
-
00:16:52
Someone is taking care
of this on a daily basis.
-
00:16:56
Part of the reason why
I don't have a garden,
-
00:16:58
I hate gardens because
I don't want to spend time
-
00:17:02
on a stinking garden.
-
00:17:03
It's not worth it to me.
-
00:17:04
But I tell you what, I
know my heart is a garden.
-
00:17:07
I know my life is a garden
and I have to tend it every day.
-
00:17:10
One of the ways we
have to tend it is to know
-
00:17:13
where we go to hear from
God and to talk with God,
-
00:17:19
and to tap into a spiritual
power that isn't ours.
-
00:17:23
It's His power
that's flowing in us.
-
00:17:28
God has more for you
than you can even imagine.
-
00:17:31
And one of the ways
He gets more for you
-
00:17:35
is understanding Him better
and spending time every day
-
00:17:39
to try to hear from Him.
-
00:17:41
During this Journey
it's multisensory, tactile,
-
00:17:44
all different angles, trying
to get you closer with God.
-
00:17:49
That's what this
journal is about.
-
00:17:50
We don't want anything from you.
-
00:17:52
We want something for you.
-
00:17:53
We want you to hear from God,
-
00:17:55
to grow to be the person
He's designed you to be.
-
00:17:57
That's called spiritual growth.
-
00:17:59
Now, you know, I have
a place I go to every day
-
00:18:03
and I have a time
I do it every day.
-
00:18:04
You need to find your
place, you know your time.
-
00:18:08
But you know what
happens sometimes?
-
00:18:10
I miss, whatever
reason, I just miss.
-
00:18:12
What I don't do is beat myself
up that day and just quit.
-
00:18:16
No. The next day, I
got another shot at it.
-
00:18:18
When you miss something,
you just start again.
-
00:18:20
We're going to fail.
-
00:18:22
But we can make
a decision this day,
-
00:18:26
tomorrow, to go forward.
-
00:18:28
That's what I want for you.
-
00:18:30
I want you to grow.
-
00:18:31
I want you to be the person
God designed you to be.
-
00:18:34
I want you to
have all the things
-
00:18:36
that God wants to give you.
-
00:18:38
But you've got to get with God
-
00:18:40
for Him to start giving
you those things.
-
00:18:42
That's what this
Journey is about.
-
00:18:43
Let me pray for you
right now so that happens.
-
00:18:47
Lord, You're good to
give us this Journey.
-
00:18:49
Thank you for it as a gift.
-
00:18:51
We're looking forward to seeing
-
00:18:52
what You're going
to do in our lives
-
00:18:55
as a result of having
our time with You.
-
00:18:57
I pray You'd bring a
season of growth to all of us.
-
00:19:00
Just come through our
lives, take the weeds out,
-
00:19:03
bring the water in, grow us
to be who You want us to be.
-
00:19:07
Thank you for doing so.
-
00:19:08
I pray these things
according to the character
-
00:19:11
and identity of Jesus. Amen.
-
00:19:14
- There are three
parts to the journey.
-
00:19:16
Step one: Attend the weekend
-
00:19:19
and receive weekly
teaching at a site or online.
-
00:19:22
Get inspired with the good news.
-
00:19:25
Step two: Do your guide work.
-
00:19:28
You get your very
own printed guide.
-
00:19:31
It'll help you create a plan
of action to grow deeper.
-
00:19:34
And step three:
meet with your group.
-
00:19:38
During the Journey
we meet in groups
-
00:19:40
to talk about what we're
learning, grow deeper together.
-
00:19:42
Go here for more.
-
00:19:44
Come Grow!
-
00:19:48
I don't know how long we've been
doing the journey at Crossroads.
-
00:19:50
Like a super long time.
-
00:19:51
But I'm just going
to be honest and say
-
00:19:53
I can directly tie
breakthroughs
-
00:19:55
that still are in effect in
my life today to the journey.
-
00:19:59
Like years and
years ago we did one,
-
00:20:01
I think it was called
The Journey Home,
-
00:20:03
and it was all about
like, who are you really?
-
00:20:05
- Yeah.
-
00:20:06
And now in my life,
people will say, like,
-
00:20:08
"Hey, you're a confident guy.
How did you get that confident?
-
00:20:12
But hopefully not
overly confident,
-
00:20:13
just like the appropriate
amount of confident.
-
00:20:16
- The amount you need
to make it through.
-
00:20:17
Yeah. "Tell me about that.
When did that happen for you?"
-
00:20:20
And I can directly tie
that to the Journey Home
-
00:20:22
and that breakthrough
has lasted in my life.
-
00:20:24
That's so good.
-
00:20:25
You know, we probably got
some skeptics at home right now.
-
00:20:27
If you're a skeptic,
that's totally okay.
-
00:20:29
You're like, what is this
thing? Doesn't really work?
-
00:20:32
I'm going to tell you, the only
way to find out is to try it.
-
00:20:35
We're in the journey.
This is week one.
-
00:20:37
You can still hop in,
-
00:20:39
you can still get one of
these awesome guides
-
00:20:41
and you can get in a group by
going to Crossroads.net/Journey.
-
00:20:45
You can take two
steps, two very tiny steps
-
00:20:48
that can lead you
towards growth in your life.
-
00:20:51
And we want to see you do it.
-
00:20:52
That's right.
- Absolutely. Do it.
-
00:20:54
So we'll see you
next time on Crossroads.
