-
00:00:00
You were made to be brave.
-
00:00:02
You were born to make a difference.
-
00:00:04
God designed you for heart-pumping,
joy-filled adventure
-
00:00:08
and we're here to guide you
to that adventurous life.
-
00:00:11
Crossroads Church.
-
00:00:16
Hey, everyone, and
welcome to Crossroads.
-
00:00:18
My name is Hannah Sheppard.
-
00:00:20
Happy Fathers' Day to all the fathers out there.
-
00:00:23
So excited to celebrate you guys.
-
00:00:25
I know I'm going to be celebrating my dad.
-
00:00:27
I'm going to get him
an Easy Bake Oven,
-
00:00:29
just what he's been
wanting and I cannot wait.
-
00:00:32
Crossroads is a place that was
made for you every step of your journey,
-
00:00:35
whether that's
just exploring God,
-
00:00:38
or maybe you're already
in relationship with Him.
-
00:00:40
And if you are in a
relationship with God,
-
00:00:42
we're going to be
taking communion today
-
00:00:44
and that's just to remember the
sacrifice that Jesus made for us.
-
00:00:47
So I want you to
be ready for that,
-
00:00:49
so go ahead now and grab something to eat
and something to drink.
-
00:00:52
I've got some Ritz
Crackers and some Sprite.
-
00:00:54
And so if that's your story, that'll work.
-
00:00:57
Today we're in our last week of the Anchored series
-
00:00:59
where Brian is
going to talk to us
-
00:01:01
about the last part of the
Apostles' Creed, the church.
-
00:01:12
- In the second and third century, just like today,
-
00:01:14
there were a lot of opinions on what it meant
-
00:01:16
to believe in Jesus.
-
00:01:18
His followers knew this was a problem,
-
00:01:20
so they worked together to write formal statements
-
00:01:22
about what those non-negotiable beliefs were.
-
00:01:25
They called those statements creeds
-
00:01:28
and one of the most well-known and enduring
-
00:01:30
is the Apostles Creed.
-
00:02:14
For 1700 plus years, these are the truths
-
00:02:17
that Christians have anchored themselves to.
-
00:02:30
- I'm in right now Crossroads Uptown,
-
00:02:32
one of the places we meet physically when we can.
-
00:02:35
And a lot of people have always loved this building.
-
00:02:37
I have not.
-
00:02:38
In fact, I've really never loved any church building.
-
00:02:41
Whenever I'm in a church building it oogies me out.
-
00:02:45
I've gotten a little better today.
-
00:02:46
But, man, initially just really -- Why is that?
-
00:02:48
Because I've got a lot of bad memories in church-y buildings.
-
00:02:53
When I was a little kid I would sit in the very front row
-
00:02:56
in the middle while my mom played the organ
-
00:02:58
and my dad sang in the choir.
-
00:02:59
And we'd open up our our hymnals,
-
00:03:02
which I thought they were known as hum-nals,
-
00:03:04
because everyone would always hum. (vocalizing)
-
00:03:08
No one was really into singing.
-
00:03:10
And I would just hum my way along
-
00:03:11
and partly I was humming because I could even read.
-
00:03:14
I would have the hymnal actually upside down.
-
00:03:17
And I -- and I would read and I just never got it.
-
00:03:21
I never connected.
-
00:03:22
So church buildings really turn me off.
-
00:03:26
When it comes to church, whether it is a building
-
00:03:29
or whether a church is a collection of people, it bothers me.
-
00:03:33
As I got older, I would walk further and further
-
00:03:38
back into the church to get away from the front.
-
00:03:42
And I wish someone had told me about
-
00:03:44
Ephesians 2:19 and following that says this:
-
00:04:24
As I was in the midst of all of these people,
-
00:04:27
I was actually in the midst of Ephesians 2,
-
00:04:29
a bunch of different people with different backgrounds
-
00:04:32
and some different viewpoints gathering together.
-
00:04:36
I never really understood the "Holy Catholic Church,
-
00:04:40
Communion of the Saints" line that is in the Apostles Creed.
-
00:04:45
Now, I wasn't Catholic, or specifically Roman Catholic,
-
00:04:50
as many of my friends were.
-
00:04:52
And I thought that was a problem when we used to
-
00:04:54
recite this creed, "One holy Catholic Church."
-
00:04:58
Catholic here doesn't mean Roman Catholic.
-
00:05:01
Catholic means all embracing.
-
00:05:03
The early followers understood that they were going
-
00:05:05
to have differences in minor doctrines.
-
00:05:08
They were going to have differences
-
00:05:10
in how they prefer to worship.
-
00:05:12
But regardless of their personal preferences
-
00:05:14
on some secondary issues -
-
00:05:16
and what is a secondary issue?
-
00:05:17
Virtually anything that's not in the Apostles Creed.
-
00:05:19
These were the things that we were
-
00:05:21
supposed to be anchored to, not a lot of petty things
-
00:05:24
that Christians have fought with each other
-
00:05:26
for generation after generation.
-
00:05:30
Maybe that's why the bumper sticker exists:
-
00:05:32
Lord Jesus, Save Me from Your Followers.
-
00:05:35
We're just a bunch of cantankerous people, many of us.
-
00:05:38
We just get all anal and all up in a tizzy
-
00:05:40
over things that believers have differed with.
-
00:05:44
I tell you what, the family of God is a lot wider
-
00:05:47
and a lot bigger than a lot of Christians believe.
-
00:05:51
And if you notice from Ephesians 2,
-
00:05:53
it's not talking about buildings.
-
00:05:55
Jesus Himself is the cornerstone.
-
00:05:58
He is what central. He is the one we're built on.
-
00:06:01
Not our worship preferences.
-
00:06:04
Not how we engage the political sphere.
-
00:06:06
It is Him. He is central.
-
00:06:08
And then all of these different people
-
00:06:11
are being placed together to form a church,
-
00:06:15
not a building, to form a communion of saints.
-
00:06:19
I wish someone had told me that, but they didn't.
-
00:06:23
And so as I would age, I would get more and more cynical,
-
00:06:28
going further and further into the back of the church.
-
00:06:34
In the Book of Matthew 16, it says this
-
00:06:39
that Jesus says to His disciple Peter:
-
00:06:53
Jesus asked Peter and the other disciples,
-
00:06:55
"Who do people say that I am?"
-
00:06:57
Peter says, "I say, You're the Christ.
-
00:07:00
I say, You're the Savior we've been waiting for."
-
00:07:03
He gives this foundational statement
-
00:07:06
that Jesus is the cornerstone.
-
00:07:08
He's the pivotal being for all of humanity
-
00:07:12
and all the truth of God.
-
00:07:15
And when Peter says this, Jesus tells him
-
00:07:21
that he is going to be foundational,
-
00:07:22
that this testimony is going to be
-
00:07:25
the foundational statement upon which the church is built.
-
00:07:30
When I was in the back of my parents' church,
-
00:07:33
I didn't understand these things.
-
00:07:35
I thought this was the church.
-
00:07:37
I thought this was the representation of the vibrancy of God,
-
00:07:40
in which case God wasn't very vibrant.
-
00:07:43
I came to the conclusion that if this is what God is about,
-
00:07:46
A, God doesn't exist,
-
00:07:48
or I don't really want to be in the God page.
-
00:07:51
Right around that time, yes, I'm dating myself,
-
00:07:53
the song Highway to Hell by AC/DC.
-
00:07:58
God Bless America, AC/DC, right?
-
00:08:01
I'm on the Highway to Hell and me and my friends
-
00:08:03
would just fist pump that.
-
00:08:04
And it was when I would sing that song and fist pump it,
-
00:08:07
it was more so an anthem against this,
-
00:08:12
like this somberness, this lifelessness
-
00:08:15
is not something I want to be a part of.
-
00:08:17
I remember looking at a guy, he was in his 50s,
-
00:08:19
he was a bit overweight, right over this way.
-
00:08:21
And he was falling asleep in the service.
-
00:08:23
And I remember thinking myself, "Dude, what are you here for?
-
00:08:27
I'm only here because I have to be here.
-
00:08:30
You obviously don't want to be here, and yet you're here.
-
00:08:33
Why? I don't understand, because there's no life here
-
00:08:35
that I want to be involved in whatsoever."
-
00:08:39
This fueled this cynicism that I had to church,
-
00:08:42
to churches and I had to realize, man,
-
00:08:47
if I'm cynical about the church, the holy Catholic Church,
-
00:08:51
embracing that God is doing different things
-
00:08:53
in different people, that we all come together
-
00:08:55
being formed into a building,
-
00:08:57
that's what Ephesians 2 talks about.
-
00:08:59
By the way we read that before,
-
00:09:00
that the Holy Spirit is coming not to fill a building,
-
00:09:03
but God's Spirit resides in people who have received Jesus,
-
00:09:08
and specifically not just you as an individual,
-
00:09:10
though the Holy Spirit can reside in you as an individual,
-
00:09:13
but the context of that passage in Ephesians 2 says
-
00:09:16
God's Spirit comes when there is a collection of people
-
00:09:21
who say, "Jesus is the cornerstone. He is central."
-
00:09:25
When there are people who are coming together,
-
00:09:27
there is a church that has power.
-
00:09:30
If you want the power of God,
-
00:09:33
you're going to have to be pro church.
-
00:09:36
You've got to get away from your negativity
-
00:09:39
and cynicism around the church.
-
00:09:41
If you don't like the church, then you don't like Jesus
-
00:09:45
because Jesus is about the church,
-
00:09:48
He's about a collection of people.
-
00:09:49
And when I find people who are negative on the church,
-
00:09:52
I also find somebody who really is lacking a spiritual power.
-
00:09:56
Maybe great arguments, but lacking a spiritual power.
-
00:09:59
The church is the greatest thing God has ever created.
-
00:10:04
The Bible says Jesus has come and died for the church.
-
00:10:08
He loved the church so much that He has died for her.
-
00:10:11
That's another verse in the book of Ephesians.
-
00:10:14
Friends, we've got to have a great attitude about the church,
-
00:10:17
about the communion of saints, about the Holy Catholic Church,
-
00:10:22
different languages, different worship preferences.
-
00:10:25
We've got to have a good attitude about,
-
00:10:26
because that's who Jesus died for
-
00:10:29
and that's the group of people
-
00:10:30
that He's uniquely pouring His Spirit into.
-
00:10:33
Pouring His Spirit into for what purpose?
-
00:10:36
Well, that's what I talk about next.
-
00:10:44
- I'm so glad Brian talks about how Jesus died for the church.
-
00:10:48
And that does not mean a building, that means you and me.
-
00:10:51
And so that's why I'm excited that our church
-
00:10:53
is having an impact even when our buildings are closed.
-
00:10:57
And now, more than ever, our friends and neighbors
-
00:11:00
need the church.
-
00:11:01
For those of us who are part of the church
-
00:11:03
or Crossroads, we tithe and just to be obedient to God,
-
00:11:06
but more than anything, to be a part of something
-
00:11:09
that is bigger than ourselves.
-
00:11:11
And you can do that right now as well.
-
00:11:13

-
00:12:52
- Oh, the smell of the locker room,
-
00:12:54
the musky testosterone has been seeping from masculine pores.
-
00:12:59
Maybe it's the same in a female locker,
-
00:13:01
although it would be estrogen seeping.
-
00:13:03
I don't know. I've never been in a female locker room.
-
00:13:05
But there's something about locker rooms.
-
00:13:09
It's because it's a place where something's happening.
-
00:13:13
It's a place of preparation for something to happen.
-
00:13:15
It's a place where people have come together
-
00:13:18
to bond together to do something together.
-
00:13:21
That's what a church should be.
-
00:13:23
The church is the place where the identity of Jesus
-
00:13:27
should be anchored.
-
00:13:28
A church is a place where people should understand
-
00:13:31
the attributes of Jesus
-
00:13:33
because there is a team that is there together.
-
00:13:38
I think part of why I've never connected
-
00:13:41
with church buildings is because the church building
-
00:13:46
isn't as inspiring to me as a locker room.
-
00:13:48
Because when you're in a locker room,
-
00:13:49
you're in a place where people are doing things.
-
00:13:51
They're resting from having done something.
-
00:13:54
They're getting strategy.
-
00:13:55
They're getting each other fired up.
-
00:13:56
My most inspiring times as a human being
-
00:13:59
oftentimes were in a locker room in high school.
-
00:14:02
And I just always wondered, why can't we be
-
00:14:04
that inspired when we're in church?
-
00:14:07
It's probably because we're not really clear in church
-
00:14:10
what we're there for.
-
00:14:12
Are we there as the church to sing?
-
00:14:14
Are we there as a church to learn?
-
00:14:16
I'm all for singing and I'm all for learning,
-
00:14:19
but the church is about moving.
-
00:14:22
That passage we looked at before in Matthew 16,
-
00:14:26
when Jesus tells Peter, "Upon this rock I'll build my church,"
-
00:14:30
and the next part is,
-
00:14:31
"And the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
-
00:14:36
Gates are defensive instruments.
-
00:14:40
They're not offensive instruments.
-
00:14:43
When I was less mature in my understanding of the church,
-
00:14:45
I used to think that I needed to go to church
-
00:14:47
to get away from all the bad things
-
00:14:49
that are happening outside these walls.
-
00:14:51
I've got to get in my little holy huddle.
-
00:14:52
I've got to -- I've got to escape to get spiritual.
-
00:14:56
And I am up for escaping to get spiritual
-
00:14:59
and getting away from things that happen in the world.
-
00:15:01
There's something about that with the church,
-
00:15:02
but really, the church is an offensive instrument.
-
00:15:05
The gates of hell are defensive.
-
00:15:07
What Jesus was saying is, "Peter, you're going to be
-
00:15:10
a part of a movement where people who are coming together
-
00:15:12
and moving and bashing down and overthrowing gates
-
00:15:18
and systems that are happening in our world
-
00:15:21
that are not the way of God."
-
00:15:23
When a church is at its best,
-
00:15:25
it comes together in a locker room environment,
-
00:15:27
whatever the church building may look like
-
00:15:29
and whatever the house may look like,
-
00:15:30
where all different kinds of believers are together.
-
00:15:33
And we say, "Folks, are we really clear on who we are?
-
00:15:36
Are we really clear what we're here to do?
-
00:15:38
Because we -- we are going to do that.
-
00:15:41
We are going to go out and bless this world
-
00:15:46
and bring the name of Jesus to this world."
-
00:15:49
That's why it's so important for us to remind ourselves
-
00:15:51
of that here at Crossroads,
-
00:15:52
and to show stories of people who are making masks
-
00:15:56
or being generous or banding together to help kids
-
00:16:00
or being a church that speaks to, hey,
-
00:16:02
we have a race problem in our country.
-
00:16:03
We need to try to fix that and get people together.
-
00:16:07
There's got to be plays, there's gotta be a strategy to us
-
00:16:11
versus my strategy is to live my life and do whatever I want
-
00:16:14
and then evacuated to a church building
-
00:16:17
and get my church on.
-
00:16:18
No, you get your church on when you get on a team
-
00:16:21
and you get engaged in the world.
-
00:16:24
This is the call of Christ.
-
00:16:27
And if you're anti church, anti Church involvement,
-
00:16:30
guess what? You're anti Jesus.
-
00:16:32
You're anti being on the team of Jesus.
-
00:16:36
That's what we mean when we say we are the hands of Christ.
-
00:16:40
We're the feet of Christ. We're the eyes of Christ.
-
00:16:43
It actually comes from the book of 1 Corinthians 12,
-
00:16:45
this long diatribe on us being a body that moves.
-
00:16:51
Here's what one section says:
-
00:17:04
We are a body and we are one and we are meant to move.
-
00:17:09
That's what a body does, it moves, it sees.
-
00:17:13
It retreats and rests and sleeps.
-
00:17:14
But we're put together to be able to move someplace
-
00:17:18
and do something.
-
00:17:21
Every church is going to look a little different
-
00:17:22
because every church, every gathering of believers
-
00:17:25
has got a few different things that they believe.
-
00:17:27
Every church has got a few different focus areas
-
00:17:29
that maybe another church doesn't. And that's OK.
-
00:17:31
God doesn't want and need all churches to be the same.
-
00:17:34
We need to be one,
-
00:17:35
even if we're not gathering together all the time.
-
00:17:38
Every person inside of the team of Jesus,
-
00:17:42
which is the church, has different abilities,
-
00:17:44
different skills, different aptitudes.
-
00:17:47
All of these positions up here have different sizes,
-
00:17:50
have different speed levels.
-
00:17:51
You've got the heavy weights, you got the fleet of foot.
-
00:17:53
All of them are needed to come together in a winning team.
-
00:17:57
And this is the way it is in the church.
-
00:17:58
Maybe the reason why the world isn't progressing
-
00:18:01
as much as we'd like to, it isn't getting more healthy,
-
00:18:04
it isn't getting more loving, it isn't getting more whatever,
-
00:18:08
might be because you're on the sidelines.
-
00:18:12
It might be because you've been duped by our enemy
-
00:18:16
who we're engaging with, you've been duped by your enemy
-
00:18:20
to think that I'm just supposed to go to church
-
00:18:22
and agree with what's there or disagree
-
00:18:24
and have some spiritual -- No, you're not.
-
00:18:27
No, you're supposed to go to church so you can be the church
-
00:18:31
and engage our world, to be part of offense,
-
00:18:34
pushing back the hellish things that are in our world.
-
00:18:38
You start doing that, we start doing that,
-
00:18:42
and people start getting more interested in Jesus.
-
00:18:47
It's good to be on a team.
-
00:18:48
It's good to be in a locker room.
-
00:18:50
And it's good for the church to gather in buildings,
-
00:18:53
to get clear on the mission and to restore ourselves
-
00:18:57
because we are a body that's moving.
-
00:19:00
And one of the things we do when we gather
-
00:19:02
is we partake of the body of Christ, it's known as communion.
-
00:19:06
Let's go back to our church building and do that right now.
-
00:19:29
So today, we've tried to get anchored in the ancient belief
-
00:19:34
that there is one holy Catholic Church
-
00:19:36
and a communion of saints.
-
00:19:37
One holy Catholic Church, God's people are in different places
-
00:19:41
in different parts of the world
-
00:19:43
with different preferences, but we are one.
-
00:19:45
For everyone who sees Jesus as the cornerstone,
-
00:19:48
He is building a building with us together
-
00:19:51
and we are to be together.
-
00:19:53
We are to commune with one another.
-
00:19:56
It says in the Book of Acts 20:7:
-
00:20:05
We're gonna actually take communion right now.
-
00:20:08
It roots us, it anchors us in what makes us different,
-
00:20:11
those of us who are on Jesus's downline.
-
00:20:14
When he instituted communion, He took the bread
-
00:20:16
and He broke it and He says,
-
00:20:19
"This bread signifies My body that is broken for you.
-
00:20:23
When you gather together, take and eat of My body."
-
00:20:30
The body of Christ broken for you.
-
00:20:36
He then took the wine and He poured it out.
-
00:20:42
And He said, "This wine represents My blood,
-
00:20:47
My blood that is poured out for you, spilled for you
-
00:20:52
so thatyou don't have to work off your own trespasses.
-
00:20:55
I've worked it off for you.
-
00:20:56
And He said, "When you gather together,
-
00:20:58
when you commune together, take and drink My blood."
-
00:21:03
The blood of Christ shed for you. Take drink.
-
00:21:13
When people come together, anchored and rooted
-
00:21:17
in Him being the cornerstone of a building
-
00:21:18
of people being fit together,
-
00:21:20
and when we see ourselves not as a stable structure,
-
00:21:24
but as a living, moving, breathing team,
-
00:21:28
a group of people that is meant to offensively change
-
00:21:31
and bless the world because we are anchored in Him,
-
00:21:35
when that happens, friends, the world starts to change.
-
00:21:38
Our world needs some changing
-
00:21:40
and the work of Christ needs to go on.
-
00:21:43
It's going to go on through you and I
-
00:21:45
and other universal people in the Church of Jesus Christ.
-
00:21:49
Let's be a team. Let's be offensive.
-
00:21:52
And let's be a blessing this week.
-
00:21:57
One of the things we can do is go on offense
-
00:22:00
and sing these words to God.
-
00:22:01
We're going to do that right now.
-
00:22:02
These are ancient hymns.
-
00:22:04
And let's not try to hum these hymns.
-
00:22:07
Let's sing it like we mean it to the very God who gives us life.
-
