Despite its rich tradition, culture, values, and natural beauty, the area is categorized as economically distressed, with high concentrations of poverty, unemployment, poor health, and severe educational disparities. Although significant progress has been made in recent decades, there remains a substantial gap in achieving economic and living conditions comparable to the rest of the country.
