Is this the same thing as GO Local?
This is the first time in five years that we intentionally bring all Crossroads sites together in one day to serve our community. We have a new name, a new look, and a renewed focus on elevating the work of Crossroads partners in our communities. City Serve Day is here to stay.
Why change the name?
GO Local has become the name for Crossroads ReachOut's efforts in our local community all year round. GO Local includes initiatives such as the Thanksgiving Food Drive, Christmas Gift Drive, City Serve Day, and any Ongoing Initiatives. In the same way that we GO on trips, we want to build a culture of people who GO where we call home.
What is the City Serve Day time commitment?
It depends. Most projects are scheduled for 4-hour shifts, but some might differ depending on project and partner requirements. Check out the serving opportunities to see which works best for you and your family.
Will there be service that weekend?
Yes, we will have regular services on June 16 and at Oakley on Thursday, June 13.
Is there a City Serve Day kick-off at sites?
No. However, each project will have an orientation at the beginning of each shift. You and all the volunteers will meet directly at your respective project sites to begin serving unless your Project Leader identifies a specific meeting location. You will hear from your Project Leader with particular details closer to June 15th.
Is this the only time we serve our city? What other opportunities happen all year round?
We are glad you asked! In addition to City Serve Day and our other main ReachOut events, Thanksgiving Food Drive and Christmas Gift Drive, we are launching our Ongoing Serving Opportunities. You can find any of these Ongoing Serving Opportunities HERE.
How and when do I sign up?
Visit this page, select your site from the options on the left, choose a project, and sign up. Sign-ups will open to the general public on May 19th. We expect these to fill faster than a Taylor Swift concert.
I can't be there the whole time. Can I leave early?
If you know you already have a conflict, we recommend you sit this one out. We understand that life happens, but we will do our best to honor our partners with our time commitment. Check out other opportunities HERE.
What if I want to serve with a big group of friends?
First, you have a great group of friends! Each participant needs to sign up through their Crossroads account. If you invite friends without a Crossroads account, basic sign-up is easy at crossroads.net.
Pro Tip: Get together with that fantastic group of friends before sign-ups open, decide on the best project for you, and sign up simultaneously. This will help ensure you are all on the same project when you sign up.
Can I serve with my family? How do I sign all of us up for the same project?
Yes! We love it when families serve together! The sign-up page has a drop-down menu for selecting family members from your household. Simply choose who will be joining you. The family sign-up limit is five people. Easy-peasey!
What is the minimum age for doing this?
Minimum ages vary by project. The minimum age requirements are listed on the first page of the project sign-up. We recommend that your kids be able to complete the tasks described in the respective project description safely.
I have physical limitations. Are there projects I can still help with or work behind the scenes?
Yes! Check out all the available project descriptions to see which works best for you. We will have many opportunities to serve regardless of physical limitations. You can specify any limitations during the sign-up process. We can’t wait to serve alongside you!
What is a GO Group Leader? What is the commitment?
GO Group leaders will help lead groups of up to 9 people and serve as leaders during City Serve Day. You do not have to be Bob the Builder to be a GO Group Leader, but experience with the project description and people skills will be handy. The project Leader will provide further instructions at least two weeks before June 15th.
Do I have to sign a waiver?
Yes. Part of the registration process includes signing a photo release and a liability waiver. Some partners may require you to sign additional, specific waivers.
The project I am interested in is full. Can I still sign up?
All projects have a limited capacity. If you cannot find an opportunity to serve after exploring all the projects you might be interested in, please sign up for the waiting list. Although this does not guarantee a spot, we will contact you if additional spots become available.
I live in another state far from any listed City Serve Day Projects. Are you doing projects in other cities across the county?
For projects outside Cincinnati, Lexington, Dayton, and Columbus, please email anywhere@crossroads.net, and we can guide you through serving your city.
When will I get a confirmation with the address and instructions for the serve day?
Once you complete your registration sign-up, you will receive an email confirmation containing information for the project you signed up for. Your project leader will also email additional information.
What time do I need to arrive?
Your project leader will send you this information at least three days before the event. Plan to arrive before the start of your selected shift time.
Do I need to wear anything special? What do I wear?
Yes. In addition to wearing deodorant, please wear clothes that can get dirty and sweaty. Work pants, closed-toed shoes, and plain light gray T-shirts are highly encouraged.
Do I need to bring anything? Any supplies?
Your Project Leader will contact you to let you know if any specific supplies or tools are needed. If your project description involves physical work, plan on bringing gloves. You will not be required to purchase anything to participate in City Serve Day.
Since City Serve Day is in summer, and many projects are outdoors, you may want to bring bottled water in case a partner doesn’t have it or runs out.
Will City Serve Day still happen if it’s raining?
Yes! We GO, rain or shine. You will be notified of any changes the weather might cause to your project. The one thing guaranteed is that we will make a difference!
What happens if an illness or unforeseen situation arises and I can’t make it on the day of?
We understand! Let your project leader know as soon as possible so that we can invite people on the waiting list.
What happens if I get sick or injured on a project?
If appropriate, emergency services will be notified immediately. Your safety and care are essential. You will be required to provide Emergency Contact information during the sign-up process. We will contact this person only in case of an emergency.
Can I count this as service hours for my school/work?
Absolutely. Please note that City Serve Day is happening on June 15th. Summer classes, anyone?
